My First 4WD Experience with my '16 T4RTE - NOT GOOD

I took my '16 T4RTE out to my weekender ranch today (under 200 miles on the ODO at this point) and decided to play with the multi-terrain select features for the first time since the county road leading up to my gate is unimproved sandy loam.

Based on the manual (for which Toyota is great at telling you how to turn shit on, but horrible in telling you how to turn it back off), I came to a stop, turned on MTS, selected the first option (for mud and sand) and then looked at the dash to see the information screen telling me 'Shift to 4WD'. I moved the 4WD shifter (mine has the stick, not the knob) to H4 (as per the manual) and then set on my merry way, never exceeding 30mph (not a requirement, just road conditions don't allow for much faster out there).

When I got to my gate, I threw it into park, got out, opened the gate, rolled it in and then disabled MTS by pressing the button on the dial (leaving the vehicle in H4). Then my dash lit up like a Christmas tree with all sorts of warnings. The 4WD shifter seemed jammed as I couldn't get it back into H2, but COULD get it into N and 4L (I heard the gears grinding ever so briefly when I tried moving the shifter). Once I moved it into 4L, then I couldn't get it back into H4!! I turned MTS back on and the errors went away, but the shifter was still not letting me get back to H2 or H4, so I left it in 4L and drove into the property slowly. It didn't seem to matter if I was in park, drive or neutral on the drive shifter, I was limited to N or 4L on the 4WD system. Once I got to the cabin, I threw it into park and kept it running for a bit while I tried to figure it out. Given this was my first experience with the T4R's 4WD system, I could only surmise that I had screwed something up in the sequence.

I consulted the holy handbook from Toyota which wasn't much help as I continued to get worried thinking there was some disengagement order I missed. Something must have disengaged on its own as I was finally able to get it into H4 again, then H2 before finally turning MTS off.

When I left the ranch, I figured I'd give it another shot and see if I could reproduce, but I was unable to. It doesn't seem to matter now if I throw it into H2 while MTS is enabled (it tells me on the dash to shift into 4WD) or disable MTS while still in H4 and I haven't seen it freak out like that again.

Has anyone else had a brand new T4RTE and tried out the 4WD/MTS system with less than 500 miles on it? Did you experience anything similar? Should I take it in and have Toyota give it a once over?

Nothings wrong with it. You just need to learn how to use it. It's really not that difficult.

PEBCAK

Note, your visor has some simplified instructions on the 4 wheel drive mechanism, and your dashboard will guide you through some additional settings if available.

It sounds like you may want to 'throw' the transmission (not the transfer case) into N if you're shifting the transfer case while stopped. You should have no problem moving from 2H to 4H while moving. Moving from 4H to 4L must be done while stopped and is easiest when the Transmission is in N (as directed per the manual). Shift the tcase fast when going from H to L and back, otherwise you'll get a slight grinding noise from hanging out in tcase N.

MTS will only function in the mud and snow setting when in 4H or 4L. All other MTS settings (except for off) will only function in 4L. If you switch from 4H to 2H while MTS is selected, then MTS will advise you that you gone and messed up. Nothing is broken.

Next time get the vehicle stuck and take pictures and video as I was highly disappointed with the content vs the title of this thread. :artist2:

Don't take this the wrong way but until you fully understand everything just work on shifting into 4HI and 4LO properly first. Learn when you can shift into each and practice that. Shifting into 4WD is always the first step.

Good luck.

Sounds like you don't want your Runner any more. I will buy it for cheap, say $1000?

I found the 4wd selector in our '15 TE a little stiff and grinded a little the first couple of times I shifted but now it is super smooth.

Anybody tried the Sam Adams Nitro Coffee Stout? I'm not a big beer drinker, but DAMN this stuff is good!!!
I heard a radio ad for it this morning. Haven't tried it yet, but most any beer on nitro is super smooth and creamy. Interested in their nitro IPA

I am disappoint.

One word... Occulto. Best most unique beer yet. Google it.

Nice recommendation! Their website says they stock it at the Publix up the street. I know what I'm doing in my 4Runner tomorrow. Currently I'm hooked on Swamp Ape Double IPA. Best beer I've had since moving from Cali, where Pliny the Elder is Champ (tied with Dogfish 120, which was my go to in MD).

If you want to step it up and drink an adult beverage that's truly one of the smoothest out there, never mind it ranks near the top of every ranking ever, try Trappists Rochefort 8. It's much smoother than the 10. Be warned it's about six bucks a bottle but it's worth it just to see what a good beer is supposed to be. Good luck and the Occulto is amazing. The blue agave is very evident as is the Tequila barrel stave hints.

Just want to say that Ballast Point Sculpin wins in my book and I like where this thread progressed to and not really where it started.
