my gas mileage sucks!!!!

i have a 1994 toyota 4runner sr5 4wd v6. it has 137k miles. so i filled my tank awhile ago and i have now concluded i get around 200 miles to a full tank....pretty bad, around 12mpg give or take.

i dont know if this matters but It has a check engine light on(diagnosis- unknown, but runs fine, possibly an o2 sensor) and an exhaust leak at the manifold.

is this normal mileage for this car? and what would improve this mileage?

I am getting about 200 per tank also. form what i have read here it is just one of those things that you deal with if you have a 4runner. i searched high and low for ideas but they all seem to be the general tricks that we all konw about... use cruise control when you can, don't gun it when you start, keep good tire pressure and all that. one thing i did find here is to not have the ebt (or whatever it is) power turned on, the little button by the gearshift. that gives you worse gas mileage from what i have read here.

If i am wrong someone PLEASE correct me.

yea ect power, thats for towing stuff. It raises the shifting RPM's thats prolly why it makes it worse. I keep it off

Automatic (AT) with knobby/oversize tires? I'd fix the check engine light and the leak for sure (especially before winter sets in). Plus change air filter, plugs and plug wires and add bottle of Chevron Techron FI cleaner --- and hope for 14-16 MPG. Apparently after '95 they changed design of the AT lockup converter and got better mileage.

i have 96 auto and it gets 300miles a tank. but i drive at 55 on the highway on the cruise control, and city i get 250 on a tank.

tires, bearings, 4x4 or 2x4 does make a diff... i also noticed a better mileage when i changed my shocks...no joke. my runner was low assed, but when it was raised with the new shocks, the aerodynamics changed the whole.

a lot plays on gas.

new oil, plugs, wires,cap shocks, tires, gas grade(i put in 91-93 octane) and chassis lube,gas filter,carb, air filter ect!

also,older trucks have a lot of rust build up. removing it under the truck helps lower the weight of ther truck as a whole.
keeping a truck well maintained is key. a little elbow grease goes a long way fo sho.

i also took aff the protestor plates, grinded the rust off and painted them. its pretty dumb, but friction under the truck from the wind is what drives your mileage up...
