My new(to me) T4R. 97 SR5 .. ideas, upgrades???

This summer I purchased a 97 4runner with 50k original miles. WOW, that is what I thought when I saw it for sale. When I saw the vehicle it had scratches and small dings (not a problem, I didn't want an SUV to eat off of) and had some minor damage to the front right passenger side. The headlight bracket on the passenger side was banged up with a couple scratches on the fender. Apoxy fixed that (kind of). Next up were the rear wheel bearings and inner seals. Had a click, and now it's fixed.
It is the SR5 V6 4x4. My plans= First thing is going to be a cross country relocation trip to Arizona from Massachusetts for 2 years. (Because of the rust on the undercarriage the truck will thank me for this) I will be towing a motorcycle with me along with some household goods, so I need to get the weight and the trailer weight to make sure I am safe.

Ideas for trip- External cooler (definite) Tundra brake upgrade (possible). I saw stuff about the airbags in the rear coils but think I am all set with that. Anyone think different?

I LOVE THIS TRUCK. It seems under-powered and a little sluggish , but I am fine with that because I love everything else about it!

Congrats on the purchase bud, and welcome to the forums.

I guess this depends on how anal you are. Have a look at the first post in my thread to see what I did to establish a baseline.

For your trip, I think you would be happy with external cooler and tundra upgrade for the brakes.

Most people end up adding lifts and then if they do a lot if crawling, off roaring m camping etc they go with bumpers and sliders.


I am just about to fit bumpers and a toytec lift myself, only after I made absolutely sure this thing was baselines solid as a rock......as she sits I would not hesitate to drive down to Mexico or go coast to coast Canada.......change the oil, fill the gas, go.

I wanted to do a lift but in terms of towing I am not sure if that would throw the center of gravity off too much.
My bike is a 2011 Yamaha Stryker 1304cc. So far I only have 2800 miles on it because I have spent a lot of time out of the country.
I am sure in Arizona I will be putting the rubber to the pavement a lot more!
