My windshield cracked today

I've got the de-icer, and "fret" windshield on my rig, and a rock hit the windshield today, it's already running, about 4" below the hit, right down into the de-icer, with about a 6" run above the rock hit. Going to Safelite Auto Glass tomorrow, see what they suggest, and what it will cost. Oh well...:jaw drop:

Windshield replaced

My windshield got replace last week with a OEM(dealer glass) but installed by a local glass company. I have to pay my $250 deductible with my insurance.

I would go with PPG/PGW or Pilks. Personally I would stay away from FYG.

PPG and Pilks are made here in North America ( US or Canada ) although they also have overseas plants that may source the glass for a 4R.

FYG is a chinese company. From my experience their glass has too much distortion, especially at the edges, and too many bubbles and stones. It may look good going in, but the first time you drive into the setting sun the bubbles and stones will become apparent. Glass shops carry it because it is cheaper than PGW or Pilks.

Windshield Replacement Price Report Request

Anyone else got prices to report on windshield glass they have had replaced? I have tried four different shops/on location services for auto glass and they seem to vary from $280.00-$580.00

I would like to replace it with a high quality glass thats not to dissimilar to the current OME glass. Mine is heated and has blue-ish tinge.

Just trying to work out the differences in price to the brands of glass that are out there.

Mine is a Pilkington, it is not OEM, it does have the heater and the installed price was $494.87 on June 4th 2012.

It is a p/n FW3185 GTY. From Budget Auto Glass Modesto CA. I have been a customer for years and they always give me a reasonable price. They come to the house and install in my driveway.

I probably buy a new windshield every year, sometimes I get lucky and go a couple years. The aftermarket ones that I get seem not to crack as easy, but they sure get a lot of chips.

This new 4Runner may go though more windshields than my prevous vehicles due to the angle of the windshield. I already have more chips than I can count on this one that has been in since June. But no stars or cracks yet.

Vicpick58, Thank you for your prompt and detailed response. This is exactly what I was looking for. I am sorry you have to replace your's so often! I have been lucky as this is my first crack (albeit from the drivers to passengers side) since I owned the truck (2.5 years). I will call some local company again tomorrow and ask around for a price on this glass.

Hmmm, the last time my windshield got nailed was on hwy 99 near Modesto. I hate that road.

Yes, this area is terrible, I get something hit the windshield nearly every day. Usually just bounces off or leaves a tiny chip.

A lot of little rocks dropping from dump trucks, I passed one the other day that still had dirt (with gravel) piled all over the tongue of the second trailer and it was dropping a gob every bump the rig hit

Years ago I had a job driving a dump truck, and at that time we carried a broom and had to sweep off all the excess gravel after being loaded and before hitting the highway. But I guess those days are gone, they don't care anymore.
