Mysterious "clip" near my shifter...

So i've been trying to figure out what this clip thingy near my gear selector is for several years, i'd given up along time ago since i couldn't get an answer... but now i have you fine people to ask! anybody know what's supposed to live there????

This. You push the white button down to take the vehicle out of park without the key being on. I use it all the time when I am working on my Runner to roll the vehicle without the key being on.

There is supposed to be a little removable plastic cover over it.

Though, doesn't this make it easier to steal my T4R? i.e. get in the vehicle and roll it somewhere, like into a truck?

Though, I guess if most people don't know what this is, then that's a good thing.

Most auto tranny vehicles have this, you shouldn't assume most people don't know about it. Both my Hilux Surf and my Land Cruiser have had a red button there instead of a cover.

Skilled thieves already know all of your vehicle's weaknesses and can exploit them.

The odds of someone going through the trouble of breaking into your runner for the purpose of stealing it this way are probably ridiculously high. Much easier to just pop your steering column and go from there.

Not sure that helps with your comfort level...

I somehow lost mine when I was cleaning my runner this weekend but didnt notice until this morning. I took this pic and came here to look it up

Im trying to get mine back to stock or better condition and this is just going to drive me nuts.

Don't know the part number but the 4th Gen has the same piece and we call it "COVER, SHIFT LOCK RELEASE BUTTON" (shift lock release button cover). Should cost about $3 at your dealer.

Either that, or just look around here for someone parting out a 4Runner - and show them the picture, they can send you one.

I've used mine plenty of times. Mostly to pop out the dash. It's easier when the shifter is all the way back. I've always wondered about a cover though cus mine hasn't had one since I've owned the truck.

same here, but i have always had one, i lost it for all of two days and it drove me crazy......
