Mystery Bits in Bell Housing

Plus side is I got my new untragauge installed today!
A little custom fab work and it’s like it was meant for this spot [emoji1305]

Cut the ball off the mount and tapped it to bolt through the useless square filler panel.

Also got my rebuilt starter installed [emoji1303]

The mount looks good! You'll have to setup your ultragauge for a custom gauge to see the transmission temps. Here's the info you'll need to input: https://www.toyota-4runner.org/3598840-post4.html

That's an impressive thread. You've got guts I definitely don't. I wish you all the best and am excited to see how it turns out. I've been meaning to install a trans temp gauged for a loong time, but I'd need an analog one.

Thanks! I’m really hoping it shifts correctly. I’m most nervous about the accumulator springs I may or may not have gotten all mixed up and couldn’t find a definitive source for where they all go. lol
I originally bought the glow shift gauge and a bung, but decided I’d rather do the ultragauge since I can hopefully get the trans temp since it’s a 99.

Thanks, it came out better than I was hoping! Original plan was in front of the t case shifter until I didn’t like how high it sat in the mount and where the cable would have to route.

Thanks for the link [emoji1303]

Thanks to Marlin Crawler and their only shipping service, UPS, I can’t do anything until the 9th which is also the start of a 4 day trip. So first drive will hopefully be the 13th. [emoji849]

Going to send out my climate control unit to be fixed while I’m waiting and it’s all taken apart.

Finally after a month of downtime the day has come!

Took it for the first drive and it shifts great! [emoji1373]

The 1-2 shift is quick and firm and the rest are quick. Nothing jerky, just nice fast shifts.

Cooper is excited to have his ride back [emoji1305]

If I didn’t have a bunch of random parts to replace along the way, opted for the upgraded clutches or shift kit I’d estimate it to be about a $1000 job. I think it cost me roughly $1500 realistically with replacing various broken parts, transmission jack, raybestos clutches, shift kit, ultragauge and fluids. Worth it! [emoji1364]

I'm impressed. I don't think I would have the balls to rebuild an automatic trans with limited information.

Thanks, Tim!

Had I done more research or realized the IPT videos weren’t the same a340 internals I probably wouldn’t have attempted this. Having completed it, I wouldn’t hesitate to do it again. I’m not sure how this trans compares to other automatic transmissions, but other than the one spring loaded part at the very bottom (that doesn’t need to come out), everything just slides together and snap rings tell you if you got everything seated all the way.
Keeping everything on a rod in the order it came out was key. Lining up all the teeth in the clutch packs was very tedious and some of the snap rings were a pain.

I may start a new thread highlighting the process for anything thinking about rebuilding theirs. [emoji1688]

Congrats on the plan coming together with a happy ending! made it look easy.
Picked up a 01 trans this past saturday I'll dive into over the winter.
If you don't mind who did you get your parts from?

To be honest I am surprised it started on the first go! That's very impressive. With the 4x4 transmissions being discontinued lately from Toyota there would be a lot of value if you have any photos of the process you could share.

What is your opinion on the Raybestos clutch plates?

Thanks! I ordered the rebuild kit from Oregon performance transmissions. And got the raybestos clutch upgrade option. It came with a TON of extra parts. Lots of o rings and extra steels, a few extra clutches, and 4 different valve body gaskets. Very generic kit for about 20 variations. Came with a few output seals that didn’t seem to be the right size.
It did not come with a new band like in the picture. The plastic split ring shaft seals are junk and gotta be careful not the break them. The oem ones are very brittle as well. Everything that was replaceable was included and then some.
All other parts I ordered were oem like the filter, kickdown cable, t case sensor someone previous broke and new trans shifter boot. The exception was the t case to actuator vent line I got at autozone and t case shifter seat I got from Marlin Crawler.

Well, I did have to do everything at least twice, but it all came together! Haha
I’ll probably start a rebuild thread with what pictures I did take this week and link it here.

As for the Raybestos clutches I really don’t know if they’re any different.. they supposedly increase holding capacity and are able to withstand higher temps. They looked like the ones I tossed, just red and minimally thicker.
Considering I cooked the last ones and plan to tow a boat and supercharge it at some point; it seemed like a logical option for just $250 more.
Also doing the transgo kit at the same time makes it hard to tell what improved what.

Drove all over today and final thoughts on the transgo kit (truck shifts) are the 1-2 shift is a bit harder than I’d like, but that’s only when not under load. Under load it’s fast and smooth so it’s only kinda annoying in slow traffic around town. The rest of the gears shift fast and smooth. Each gear, other than the 1-2 shift rev out much higher than before. Gotta come to a complete stop shifting from drive to reverse as well now as its also firm. I assume it’ll probably smooth out a little and be just right after it breaks in.
And I’m still pretty sure all I needed was a new filter and fluid change instead of full rebuild. lol

Job well done kudos dude. where your at with trans now this a future use thing maybe.
All I can add in a positive note didn't see it mentioned.
I've been researching rebuild for a while with 01-02's notoriety and hi-mils, next level rebuild
is to replace other V/B parts in link that are not included in the two parts groups you replaced.
Transgo kit in mine sounds like it operates like yours.

Sonnax Toyota/Lexus A340F Transmission

Almost forgot, that some grill porn there what the specs ??

I’m hoping I never have to go back in there lol
I would consider pulling the valve body in the future to soften the 1-2 shift, but everything else so far so good.

Made the Pro grill myself [emoji1598]
Upper frame is from my original ‘99. Center section and lower frame is from a 3rd gen tacoma I cut and worked into mine. A ton of work, but it’s one of one. Lower frame is only possible if you have a body gap from a 1” body lift my bumper didn’t quite fill. Made custom headlight filler plates as well. SRQ makes one similar now, just not as cool. lol

Ah come on "Never going back in" !
I'm not dreading it only half ass'd looking forward to it atm.

WTF more grill area porn Headlights, skills

Use a full synthetic like Redline or AMSOIL and you'll forget that the transmission even shifts. I ran conventional fluid and it'd shift so hard that the dash would shake but with full synthetic it shifts very quick and very smooth. Now I don't even know I installed it until I give it some heavy throttle with AMSOIL synthetic, which is even better than the Royal Purple I was using before.

Good to know!

I used valvoline max life full synthetic ATF, what I’ve been using for years, but will definitely consider AMSOIL for the next flush. Especially if it will smoothen out the 1-2 shift some.

I need to figure out when I want to replace all the fluid and filter just in case there was any foreign debris or dirt from the rebuild. Not thrilled to replace it all super early since I’m out about 6 gallons of ATF throughout the whole ordeal.. lol

Between a drain and fill before I knew it was toast, transmission swap and full flush with a cooler I'm out 18 quarts... I also did install a Magnefine filter on the cooler lines as I don't want to ever have to repair a transmission again. Like never ever again.

P.S. the AMSOIL fuel cleaners work great too. My 4Runner has new injectors so it didn't do much there but on my Altima with 150K miles it gained back 3.9 MPG from 33.4 to 37.3. It lasted for about 1200 miles and then the MPG settled in the 35 range but I've got a second bottle about to go in. Worth the $10 with gas how it is.
