I wouldn't bother with an aftermarket trans temp gauge unless I had a 96-98 rig and an aftermarket gauge was my only option to read the trans temp. I used Torque Pro for years but got tired of having my phone as my vehicle monitor. I believe the Scan Gauge or Ultra Gauge is your best option.
But, if you really want to run an aftermarket trans temp gauge, watch this video:
I'm guessing you're not making a write-up or video of this rebuild, but anything you're willing to share would be awesome.

I think I’m now leaning towards an Ultra Gauge.. I use DashCommand every once in a while, but never tried to add the trans temp gauge to it. Less work..
I’ll check out the video to se if it’s worth it. [emoji1303]
I decided not to document any of the rebuild, especially since it’s just me and a messy job. I had thought about it, but I also don’t want to give bad intel being my first rebuild. Without instructions…
So far I’ve got all the internals rebuilt. Just need to button it up and do the transgo kit to the valve body.
So far I’ve learned that my memory is not good enough to take on a big project like this without instructions. Lol
Lots of back and neck exercises in preparation.
Pick and scribe tools with a 90° bend are a must. At least two.
A stool would be nice.
The drip trays worked out great.
I hate snap rings.
If you’re a hand model, this is not the job for you.
The OPT kit includes way more parts than is needed. I assume it covers a bunch of different 340 variations. The raybestos upgrade kit was short a clutch ring and ended up with two extra rings and a ton of extra steel rings. Kit included 4 different valve body baskets.
The plastic split rings are junk.
Lining up the splines with the clutches is a nightmare.
The first set of steels are directional. This was a frustrating one until I realized this.
Pay the $30 for the instructions. As long as you own something that can play a cd-rom. lol
Set up a pole to place everything on in the order you pull it out helped a ton.
Music playing kept be from losing my mind every time I had to take it all back out to figure out why things weren’t lining up.
I’ll link the tool I bought and modified that just barely did the trick compressing the one spring plate tomorrow.
Hopefully I find out I did it all correctly come testing day next week [emoji51]
Putting the sensor on the fluid out line of the transmission before any cooler would give you the best representation of the trans fluid temps.
I'd really recommend either a scangauge ($170) or ultraguage mx ($94) (
UltraGauge MX v1.4 [UltraGauge_MX_1.4_16] - $94.00 : UltraGauge) and a spiker engineering mount ($40) (
Ultragauge Mount ('96-02 4Runner, '96-00 Tacoma) - Spiker Engineering) so you can accurately monitor engine coolant temps as well. The cluster coolant temp gauge has a very large range before showing anything abnormal.
You can also see and clear check engine light codes, track fuel economy, and see a good amount of live engine data. I use mine to set oil change interval reminders, monitor fuel economy, watch coolant temps, and show distance to empty.
Thanks for the link to the Ultra Gauge! I think I might be buying one. [emoji1688]
I’ve never liked the look of the scangauge. Especially for the price, but I kinda like the ultra gauge.
I use the Torque App and it shows everything we have a digital sensor reading for. The issue is a lot of our 4Runner's voltage signals are rather archaic and sometimes don't even communicate with the ECU. The fuel levels are one of those, along with the early transmission temp sensors. They just go straight to the dash and the diagnostic port is left in the dark. There is some useful data there like engine temps and things like that but that should never be an issue as long as your radiator is fairly new.
I use it primarily for short term and long term fuel trims for tuning purposes. My 4Runner sorta is a race car, or at least it pretends to be one.
Good to know. Hopefully the trans sensor is hooked up to mine… I know the fuel level isn’t. Would’ve prevented me from running out of gas on many occasions….
Radiator is only a few years old and I just installed a trans cooler after the radiator so should be set. I’d like to know the trans temps for the day I buy a boat. lol
