Or you could put in a call to Long Beach for Randall Memphis Raines for a snatch and grab of a 4wd 4runner, though being not the fastest auto on the road, it may take longer to be gone than 60 seconds.....

This is good input, and I can see where a spare set of trail parts will come in handy when I meet up to crawl with [MENTION=143526]theesotericone[/MENTION] in the spring or summer Lol

I have a rear locker (Aussie Locker) so I guess I'm most of the way there

I carry one trail spare so that should cover us both unless we get really, really, really unlucky. lol

Also, by summer I'll be re-geared and F/R ARB locked. I've got some feelers out for a trip to the Dusy/Ershim trail mid-summer. I'm doing it but it's something having another rig or two in the group wouldn't be a bad idea.

I bought new with lifetime warranty, they have done great for the half year I’ve had em! I think it’s more cost effective to buy the new and keep your olds to reman them yourself or reboot which is all mine need, and you have 2 trail spares, plus you can get a replacement at any Napa with the receipt!

When I was repairing my '01, it needed a new outer boot on the D/S shaft because I nicked it with a flapper wheel. I got a new CV axle from NAPA and when I compared the finest in chinesium alloys, to the OEM shaft w/175K on it, the OEM one was still superior in tightness of the joints and overall construction quality. I just simply got the reboot kit from Toyota and repaired the OEM shaft. It cost just about as much to re-boot, but I felt that I had a better product as the end result.

For what it’s worth Camburg said I should buy oem tundra axles for my kit because they were better and have had customers with issues when the used auto part store axles.

But I wasn’t rich enough to fork out the money for the oem stuff

Also do a quick search using the search thread in my signature or the sticky. A lot of folks here have complained about the Napa CVs although some have had no issues.

I had both sides of my CVs rebooted with OEM sleeves after the rubber broke. I have never broken a CV on the trail. It happens but is a lot rarer than most probably realize.

What I suspect happens most often is person has a CV rubber go out and start leaking. Considers resleeving vs just swapping with Napa and replaces the whole CV.

The only downside with that is the reman CV might be cheap Chinese steel that is far weaker on the trail. So yes you have warranty but guess what now it actually breaks easily on the trail with the metal shedded vs before when it was just the rubber. So you get a replacement and another cheap reman CV then start the process all over again.

Of course I'm sure there are some reman CVs, maybe even a lot of them, that have the Toyota steel still. These fears are why I went with repair vs replace when mine finally started leaking.

If you do go with an OEM rubber replacement I suggest buying the kit that sells both boots front and rear, do both at same time. You can also save a lot of $$$ if you remove them yourself and buy the OEM parts yourself, then take them to a shop to clean, re-grease and assemble like new, once back in your possession install the CV yourself. This is the method that preserves OEM rubber boots, not too expensive and your hands only get a tiny bit dirty. BTW there are also lots of threads about the replacement CV rubber (not OEM) breaking and leaking. Usually the replacement are not up to OEM standards. My original CVs didn't leak until after 200K had gone by.

Yes. That sounds like a great plan. At least by doing it that way you still have the original CVs fully rebooted and you know they are the higher quality Japanese 90s steel. Higher than "parts-zone steel" at least.
