Long Story....
Sunday I was doing errands in my 2012 T4R Trail. The truck suddenly went into "limp mode". That's what the Toyota Service Manager called it... "limp mode", where the "A-Trak Disabled" light came on, the engine light came on, the truck went into what appeared to be 5th gear (Automatic Transmission) and the truck started acting really strange. I pulled into a parking lot, shut off the engine, waited a minute and started her up. She turned over but would not start. After trying this for 5 minutes, I figured I was not going to get her going and started the process of getting a tow.
So this is a 2012 and we had Toyota Care. When I called them they informed me it had expired in October. I would have to pay $90 for the tow. We had received a postcard from Toyota saying our 5 year warranty was expiring soon back in April or May of this year. However we had paid for an extended 84 month, 120K mile warranty. The truck has about 32K miles on it, so we verified the 7 year warranty and tossed the postcard.
I needed the truck towed to the dealer, so I shelled out the $90. It was a Sunday, so of course Service was closed and I could not get a loaner. A friend took me home, and I got a taxi to work Monday.
Around 11AM Monday Toyota called and said they had to replace the battery ($120) and I could pick my truck up after Noon. When I got there I talked to the Scott Howard, Service Manager, telling him the problems I had with the truck were not indicative of a bad battery, but something wrong with the electrical system. He ASSURED me that a dying battery could cause these issues.
I reluctantly paid for the battery and got my keys. I had been having problems with the car phone going into the dial pad when I start the truck and would not let me tap a phone number in contacts (can't do that while the vehicle is in motion.) It should come up in Contacts since that is where it was when I shut off the truck. Anyway Lisa in Service said she was an expert at Toyota programming and came out to see what was up.
We started the truck, it started right away, and the phone app came up in the wrong mode. We changed it to Contacts and shut the truck off. When we tried to start it again it would not start. Uh Oh. We tried again, and the truck started and died right away. Lisa said she would get me a loaner and have the electronics checked out. So, NOT just the battery, as the SM insisted. You can imagine what my temperment would have been if the truck had died after leaving the lot... :gun4:
The dealer is Royal Moore Toyota, 1415 SE River Rd, Hillsboro, OR 97123
On Tuesday morning my wife called to see what was up. This is where it gets fun...
They said there were 7 leaks around the windshield that damaged the electronics below. They said the windshield was AFTERMARKET and the cost would be my responsibility. We informed them of the 7 year warranty, and they said they had no record of that (btw, we had the truck serviced under warranty 2 weeks earlier, and paid nothing due to the warranty).
We told them we had never had the windshield replaced, so how could it possibly be aftermarket? It was a real headscratcher. They went away to see if they could find the warranty and try to figure out where the aftermarket windshield came from.
On Tuesday afternoon my wife called to see what was up since we hadn't heard from Toyota. They sheepishly said that Toyota used two different manufacturers for their windshield (gee, they didn't know this?) and our windshield WAS factory. However we had no 7 year warranty, only the 5 year Toyota Care, which had expired. My wife had to scan and email our original documentation showing the 84 month, 120K mile extended warranty (which also covers towing if the issue was caused by Toyota).
On Wednesday Toyota texted me that we had a $100 deductible on our extended warranty, but we would have to pay $80 to have the windshield Reinstalled.
:wtf:
My response of course was that if Toyota had installed the windshield properly in the first place we would not have had any of these problems, so the windshield reinstall was their problem.
Lisa texted me back with "I understand where you are coming from. I'll talk to the Service Manager to see what he says about it." :wow2:
My wife did some research online with "Toyota not honoring warranty windshield" and apparently Toyota has had problems with windshields as far back as 2005 (I haven't found that post yet, my wife did). Toyota is apparently not honoring the warranty for windshields. But do your own research, and I suggest having a glass repair place (or yourself if you know how) add additional sealant around the windshield if possible to prevent damage to your electronics below the dash, assuming anything you do wouldn't void their non-warranty.
I don't care how the SM feels. Back Toyota Workmanship or I will contact your Corporate Headquarters, every Toyota Forum out there and give the URL to the NHTSA to complain about their windshield problems and get a recall going.
On Thursday Lisa texted us that the Airbag replacements were in and they were going to install them, and the truck should be ready Friday.
On Friday my wife got a call from Lisa who said they had problems reinstalling our windshield (no surprise there) and that they were having a new windshield installed. We could pick the truck up later today.
I left work early in case there were problems with getting the truck, so I arrived around 4PM and returned the loaner and asked for my truck. The poor cashier girl... she told me I owed $225. :tape2: What did they think my response would be? There should have been a note to get Lisa or a Service Manager to come tell me that. I couldn't take it out on that poor girl. I told them "I'm not paying any more than our $100 deductible. Get Lisa Now".
Lisa came out and told me we were "splitting the window". The window cost Toyota $250 and they expected me to pay half. Actually, they were being gracious and "absorbing" half the cost of the windshield, which Toyota said was "Out Of Warranty". I asked her who told her that, and she rattled off some 4 letter acronym for some idiot higher-up at Toyota. I told her I wanted to talk to him. Of course she wouldn't let that happen. I told her that she didn't make enough money to hear what I had to say. Get me the GM. "Not here." Get me the Service Manager. Lisa said it was up to her to handle it, and that she had thick skin. OK. I told her there was no way I was paying for Toyota's poor windshield installation, and if I had to pay it to get my truck back, I would hit every Toyota Forum out there and tell this story and provide a link to the NHTSA and get a Toyota Windshield Recall started. "You will lose customers and money." Then I told her that I was not blaming her personally, that some chickensh$t hiding in their office put her on the front line. She was a great contact. She helped me get the truck fixed and stayed with us throughout the process. But someone had to hear what I had to say. (at one point I think some big lug came up and stood behind me. I don't get intimidated. She waved him off.)
Finally Lisa said to pay the deductible and get my truck. She would "handle it somehow". Good for her. She had more balls than anyone else there.
I give Lisa 5 stars for helping us. I give Toyota zero stars, and am going to tell this story everywhere I can, and see if I can get enough Toyota Owners who have had Windshield problems to register their complaint here: https://www.nhtsa.gov/recalls
I recommend anyone here who has had any windshield issues to register a complaint at this website, and perhaps we can get Toyota to finally fix the issue they have known about for years and refuse to take responsibility for.
Toyota has been screwing their customers long enough.
