Nav question before I take the plunge...

Hi all, I am thinking of ordering the 05 Solara Nav unit from OEMvalue tomorrow. I am debating about whether or not I need to purchase the speaker to allow for voice commands. My question is to those of you who have added the Nav after your purchase. How many have added the seperate speaker, is it difficult, and do you find it has been worth it? For those of you who didn't, what do you think about not having the voice commands?

Secondly, I probably will add satellite radio to the unit as well. Will the XM satellite radio option that costaletech sells be the only unit that will work (I mean is XM all that will work) or can sirius be used as well without having a second display? I appreciate all answers to this thread. Thanks in advance....

Personally I think the voice commands are extremely handy. It keeps you from taking your eyes off the road frequently. If it were me I would definately go for the speaker.

I am looking for a fully integrated solution for Sirius Radio, in the meantime I am using a JVC SR-2000 PNP with the PAC AUX2Car audio interface adapter to feed the audio to my Nav system. This works fine until someone brings out a fully integrated adapter for Sirius like the one you mentioned for XM.

Sirius Satellite Radio has recently struck a deal wtih Toyota (and some other car manufacturers) and supposedly beginning with the 2006 models, Toyota will begin to offer Sirius Satellite Radio as an option (as well as XM) .

So just maybe we shall see the Toyota Sirius Add-on for the Nav system.

The 2006 Lexus GS has recently been released but I don't see anything about satellite radio in the ads or on the website. Maybe soemone else can enlighten me.

toyota offers xm for the solara. its available through thier parts department and easy to install. Its an "accessory" for the solara.I just finished the conversion and it worked well. By the way i got the voice prompts to work as intended from toyota by using the jbl amp that comes in the 05 4 runner nav. I installed the pins in both plugs Radio and amp ran 2 wires and it works flawlessly.

The XM adapter has been available through Toyota for some time. I'm am interested in Sirius and will just have to wait. Hopefully not too long.

Interesting decription you gave for voice nav using existing JBL amp and you said you installed pins at the amp and at the h/u. Can you please lgive us some more info, what pins, which connectors, etc.

I used the center speaker (atop the dash) for the voice commands. Seems as though this speaker (in of itself) wasn't getting that much usage and (not being an audiophile) I can't notice a difference.

I used a simple 12 volt DC amp commonly used in Kiosk applications. It is small, fit inside the dash, and it was a done deal.

I was so worried about running the leads for the speed and reverse wires, but found that setting up the audio was more of a PITA.

Good luck with the install. Feel free to PM me and I will give you my cell number so when you find yourself doing the install and you have any questions... I will do my best to walk you through the process.

Being a bit more mechanically inclined and having performed clutch swaps, water pump, timing belt, brakes, etc etc for myself and many members of Acura-legend.com, I would rate this project a firm 3 out of 10.

I haven't added XM to my installation, although I am considering it. I am more concerned at the moment with the green lights and the spaces that exist on the sides of the Solara Nav (in my 05 sport) and as well as on the lip.

I'm working with Colin at Carson Toyota on a fix. I think there is a double din plate that would bolt on and surround the Solara Nav (for those of us with a larger opening).

I start out by saying my closest friend Derek owns A stereo shop.My hobby is cars and car audo.I was going to do a system in the 4 runner (my wifes car).I had all intentions of installing an eclipse avn zapco amps etc...I started by doing an eclipse dvd player (1/2 din) and the visuallogic headrests thru the factory system. I have an 18 month old. I quickly realized the 4 runner was hers. All i heard after that was elmo and Dora. I scrapped the system idea and decided to try the solara nav with the existing jbl system. I found mine at a salvage yard. All the guys on this board were very helpful with thier past experiences. I then did my own homework. To get voice from the solara nav you have to add pins in the factory 20 pin plug (pin 11+ pin12- pin13 shld) Oem value will provide with this info. But I did not want to go the radio shack speaker route. So i did more homework and realized that in the solara the amplifier has seperate inputs for this signal. pin22 - pin23+. I tested this on the 4 runner amp (had to add pins to the factory plug at the amp as well) and it did not work. Then i found out that the 05 4 runner with nav was the same as the solara nav. (the 03 was a stand alone with a screen that was totally different.) Will continue next

I ordered the sub amp part from a 05 with nav. swapped amps and plugged it in. The voice guidance worked perfectly. Then I also ordered the xm add on that is available for the solara thru the toyota parts accessories. This is the kit not a replacement part(much more money). it comes with the wiring and antenna. After testing that it worked i realized the xm, changer, rear seat controller all plugged in to the same port on the radio. I also know that the eclipse nav has the same port. i took the eclipse plug and spliced an eclipse 8-disc changer the xm and rear seat entertainment all into 1 pug. Now my solara nav works perfectly. the ec lipse 8 disc and sat radio work as well as the rear seat controller. As a matter of fact I installed a fm modulator for my external dvd so the factory headphones in the rear would broadcast the movie thru a fm station.
For my highlander I will be doing the avn piece it is an easy install if you don t have jbl.

Does your Solara XM display more than 10 characters for the artist or song title? My Camry XM only displays 10....kinda sucks. Just curious.

So you just ordered and replaced the JBL amp with an 05 amp? Is that right? Is there any difference between the JBL amp that came with my 05 single disc JBL system and the one that comes with limited models with Nav? How much did that cost you when you ordered it? I may just do that since I really don't want to run a seperate speaker.

I would test your amp first before ordering anything!!! I added pins to the plug that is at the amp and tested it. ( i was hoping they were the same amp without the wires) The 05 amp was a little over 300. Somewhere on this board there is a post with a part number for the pins to add to your plug (its called a repair kit)

I will check it out. I have the 05 jbl amp in mine. My only worry is that there is a difference between the standard 10 speaker AMP and the 8 speaker AMP used on the nav. I will tinker with it and find out what, if anything, works. Thanks man!

The 2005 JBL 10 Speaker Amp utilized in the 2005 4Runner Limited with factory installed navigation is part number

81650-0W050 $380.00

and is sold as a package for the 81650 which includes the amp, sub woofer speaker, and black box housing.

Now, before I dismantle my interior, can anyone who has a 2005 Limited 4runner w/ 10speaker JBL system, who has added navigation, WHETHER or not adding wires from the nav to the amp has activated the voice guidance.
