Need 3.4 swap info ASAP

yotatech has a "engine swap" section dedicated to the 3.4L .. your best bet is to go there and read some threads and see if it's in you "skill set" to do the swap

Im in the process of moving & just dont have a ton of time to read for hours tonight, so thought Id ask here.... (I can get the motor really cheap. but if I need to spend 500+ to swap it, its not worth it to me.

The easy answer, pull your 3.0 out and bolt the 3.4 in. Get the wiring harness and ECU with the donor 3.4. Then you will NEED to go read. There are a few wiring changes that need to be made.

And exhaust parts that you should just grab incase. Motor ecu wiring headers and top part and o2 sensors and wiring

so Id just need the front half of the wireing harnice , exaust & ECU

I can read all teh swap tec in a few days when I have more time. But in the morning they are going to scrap the rig unless I commit to geting the motor....

This isn't something you jump in to with out spending a few days reading and researching it. No offense, if you have to ask about it then you already don't know enough to make an educated decision and you should pass on the engine till you know more about what you're doing. Getting a few responses on one single thread isn't enough info for you to make a hasty and possibly an expensive mistake.

I have all the tools to do the swap. Just never messed with a yota swap.

the guy is willing to show me it run & sell the motor & what ever parts I need for $200.

& should mention that my 3.slooooow needs rebuilt.

If the motor runs then you won't go wrong buying it at that price. If you change your mind on the swap then you can sell the engine and triple your money easily.

I honestly think that for that price it's worth buying and selling. Even if you don't do the swap. Just try and cut the least amount of wires possible and take whatever you think you may need. You think you may need it take it.

Donor 3.4 needs to come out of the same type of truck. As in if the truck you are swapping into is a 5 speed the donor has to be a 5 speed. Auto trans wiring harness only fits a 3.4 that had a auto trans, and the same with the ECU.

So big things you need....
3.4L of same type trans
3.4 wiring harness
3.4 ECU
All the 3.4 belt driven parts (A/C pump, P/S pump, ect.)
3.4 flywheel/clutch
mix of the 3.0 and 3.4 rat hoses and heater hoses

if my memory serves thats all the 3.4 things you need. It drops in and bolts up for the most part. You have 2 really big parts tho. The 3.4 to chassie wiring, and the 3.4 exhaust manifolds dumps the collector on the wrong side of a 2nd gen.

been trying to read a few posts.. (with the wife yelling about howI need to be packing.)

looks easy enough to mod the cross over pipe. (I have metal fab skills & welder, grinder/cutoff wheels, etc.)

Sounds like Id need to do a body lift as well (dont like that part, as I dont want it any taller.) or hood mod?

Wireing looks like the hardest part.

I think the 96 runner is an auto & my 89 is a 5 speed. I saw on one post that it said you can mod the auto ECU to work with a 5 speed. But, Another said it would not work. So that part isnt too clear to me.

The majority of use will be a DD, & ocaisional weekend off roader. So, More power for freeway speeds & hauling would nice.

That doesn't make sense to me, there's no way it will matter the trans attached. For the 3.4, you can VERY easily switch to a 1996 5VZ Manual trans ECU (has to be the same year as the motor to fit the ECU harness), no need to mess with the auto ECU and wiring. Junkyards are likely to have them online. Your rig is already wired to be a manual. There's a ton and a half threads out there, just gotta do the online research.

I swapped my 99 3rd gen to a 5 speed and the ECU was all the engine needed to run properly. The engine knows no difference what car its in.

If their is any salvageable parts left like interior or anything i would make a offer on the whole truck maybe like $500 and you could eaaily get your money back with selling parts. But since your moving this may not be a option.

If he does that, his driveshaft will be on the wrong side though. He'd have to source a transfer case from a 3.4/5speed equipped T100 (not easy), or put out bucks for an adapter to run a gear drive transfer case, or do an SAS or front diff retrofit to make the diff match the tcase.

After backing up and remembering more about the build I read about. The guy was buying parts separately and ended up with a Auto trans harness and had to get a 5-speed (said the connectors didn't fit). And then he ended up doing the same with the ECU, yet the guy selling to him said all these where out of a 5-speed. He had to get the new harness and a new ECU after he found his chassis harness would not hook up (wrong year) and ended up with a different year ECU from a auto and made it work. After all that he got to drive the truck like 5k miles before it started throwing codes and running like crap. He finally got a ECU from a 5-speed and then all was fine.

Now I can only express what I have read, I too am looking into this swap but have not done it yet.
