Need a 1st gen guru

I just bought a 1st gen (1986 Automatic, 4cyl) they guy blew the 22-RE and replaced it with a 22-R. Now the transmission does not shift on its own. What would cause this, do the 86s have a ecu? Is there a way to get it working again?

yes the EFI 22re has a ECU and there is also a control box for the automatic transmission
you should try to test the shift solenoid.

Yup, there's an ECU in the passenger kick panel. The ECUs for a 22r and a 22re will be different, are you sure they installed the correct one?

The 22R does not need an ecu to run. However the Auto trans needs to get signal from the 22RE ecu. It needs to read Like RPM signal, Speed, TPS and so on. In order for you to get your tranny to work properly, you will need to switch it back to EFI and not carb. Another solution is find an older tranny that is not computer controlled, Like the ones out of the old Celica ST. hope this helps you out.

The auto trans has it's own ECM that relies in part on signals from the EFI ECM.

The 22R doesn't use the EFI ECM (just a crude Emissions ECM), so the engine EFI signals from the EFI ECM to the trans ECM are probably missing. Hence your problem (more than likely).

I would try to verify the exact setup you have as a result of the swap, then figure out the possible solutions.
