Need a new muffler!

Think I will go ahead and pick up bolts before it gets here so as to simply my install. I am putting myself in a bind installing the new exhaust the night before I drive 1100 miles from Tx to Charlotte. I hate to do it but the old exhaust is driving me nuts and I am not going to listen to it for 2200 miles there and back. Hopefully I will not get punished for breaking my golden rule of no major changes before wheeling/ long drives.

Here's a picture of the exhaust manifolds for the OP. You can see why they're called logs. The deck plate and ISR mod will do little if anything to compensate for these.

It's hard to get a good visual of them installed on your engine.

It installed with no issues or complications, according to the shop. It's a direct bolt on so everything matches like it's supposed to. Mine did not come with bolts but I think the shop supplied them because they looked new, post install. Also note, you might want to get 2 gaskets (Walker 31384 Exhaust Gasket) just in case, I've heard some installs requiring an extra gasket on the CAT side, mine didn't... I had also ordered insulators (Walker 35725 Exhaust Insulator, Walker 35111 Exhaust Insulator) but the shop ended up using the old one (one of them was not needed, the one for the back I think) as it was still in good shape.

Note: Just looking at the past pics and it seems like the new insulators were used after all...

This link should take you to the album: http://imgur.com/a/WK4pQ

While they were under there, I also had them change my fuel filter (Genuine Toyota (23300-62030) Fuel Filter Assembly) and swap the Rear Differential Breather with a new one (9093003136). I also ordered the plug to relocate the breather but never installed it.

I just ordered this complete kit from Rock Auto last night. Did your kit install without any problems? The only part I do not see listed is the bolts. Did it come with them or do I reuse the old ones?

First i wanna thank you all guys for your contribution, learning a lot.
Now let me ask this question: ARE YOU GUYS SAYING THAT THE DECK PLATE MODE AND THE ISR MODE IS A PILE OF HORSE SH!T?
I've read it's been dyno tested and proven to increase power gain. And i've noticed a little quicker acceleration after i did the mods.

Please comment! Thanks!

I don't think anyone has said that. Check out the dyno from gamefreakgc He has a dyno report. It's miniscule at best. Anything else you do to try and squeak out more HP is going to be extremely negligible other than boost (SC or Turbo) and opening up the exhaust from the block on down. It's not easy getting additional HP out of these engines.

The dyno's in the sig below are the only documented proof that they do indeed work. It's more exponential with a supercharged/turbo engine. Is it enough that you will "feel" the difference? Maybe, maybe not. This mod seems to shine in the low RPM's, not the top end. If you do enough 5 HP mods though it does add up.

I have a Borla Pro XS on my 4Runner. I had a sound clip of it that was pretty good but now I cannot find it. Not some janky Youtube video but an actual recording. It is quieter than a Magnaflow, they drone at about 2,000-2,500 RPMs which unfortunately is highway cruising speeds. My old Pickup had one and it was loud, though not as loud as a flowmaster.

The Borla sounds very good with the V6, more of a growl to it than an annoying farty noise or something. Performance gains? Not a whole lot, even for my supercharged rig. My old muffler was beat up bad so I needed one. I really like how it sounds though, not loud unless I step on it. My supercharger is almost as loud as the muffler from the inside.

Most of people I know here who are not into annoying and loud sound are on Borla exhaust system, but lovin' the deep rumble sound. I believe too you can't easily recognize the low sound on the net, better if you can meet some person with those muffler so you can hear them yourself.

I have the ISR done on my 3.4 w/ supercharger and like it. I did not go the cheap route as I bought the AirRaid kit. It looks good and installed in minutes. My 4Runner had the deckplate mod done by the PO and I never run with it open. I am generally to fearful of heavy rain (which has been common in Texas this year) and rocks/bugs going through the filter.

Dust is the only thing you need to worry about. I keep mine open all year round, unless I'm wheeling in a dusty area. Dust will kill your engine, not rain or rocks (they cannot pass through the filter media).

I've got a 2001 sr5 that I haven't done the deck plate and ISR mods yet but I put a dynomax super turbo on mine. 47$ on ebay brand new and love it. However it is louder than stock and I love it.

Lots of opinions on this. If you plan on headers & boost get a SS Cat back system & high flow cat later on. If not, get a SS muffler with a sound you like. There's hundreds of clips on you-tube. Just dont get a cheap after market muffler that will rust away in 3 years.

The rain we have had in Texas lately has been flooding and killing engines. I am debating getting a snorkel just to get to work lately. We got 4" in an a few hours last month. It jacked up the area pretty bad.

Oh, you mean floods! Yeah, in that case keep it closed. The stock opening in the fender won't see water unless you submerge yourself in a pool of water.

Installed the Walker stainless exhaust on my 4Runner last night after work. So far I really like it. The old exhaust was probably a cheap "performance/louder" exhaust and this one is really quiet. I drive a lot of miles so getting rid of the drone sound was important to me.

I did drive it around some last night to heat cycle it before retightening all the bolts and it did not feel like it was choking the supercharger any. It still took off pretty solid and ran good. I did pick up 4 new bolts for the reinstall also.

Great thread, all! My stock muffler/exhaust is starting to rust away and get holes in it, but to be fair it's 231k miles old, annnnd Colorado uses a corrosive de-icer in the winter, so it's about time.

I'm looking for exactly what the OP is, and it sounds like either the OEM or this Walker one is the way to go. I'll let you know how it goes in a couple weeks when I get around to ordering it all.

Cheers!

I've been really happy with Walker Quiet Flow SS exhaust and down pipe on my 00 T4R, it's exact fit and sounds good, not loud, nice growl at 2-3K RPM's. Will not drone inside the vehicle too which is a huge plus. Also priced right @ $150 for exhaust and $70 down pipe. Don't forget to add a couple of gaskets as well.

That's what i had..

Are you saying that "deck plate mode' is putting egine life @ risk.
Wish i had started this thread prior to doing these mods loll

Never mind saw gamefreakgc and your reply lol

Nice.. How much did this kit run you?

The "choke point" on our exhausts for a supercharged engine are the undersized down pipe (smaller than exhaust pipe diameter...) from the headers and of course, the headers. Lovely CA won't let me touch anything south of the cat so any gains I get will have to be from more fuel & more boost. Which aren't legal either LOL.

Yeah, I was curious about exactly how much more expensive it would be to go OEM...and wow. Even sourcing it from Amayama was crazy expensive. I feel like this might be one of those exceptions to the "OEM always" rule that won't kill me.

Just curious, since I'm rocking the original muffler that has 231k miles on it, will this make my truck run better anyway? I'm not talking HP gains, because this isn't the car for HP gains (that's what my Golf R is for!), but things like the fluid that comes out of my exhaust pipe, etc. I hope that stuff doesn't mean I have to replace my converter because that's not a cheap part...

Cheers! Learning every day!

The fluid is just water condensation mixing up with a little bit of black soot. Perfectly normal catalytic converter function, it converts Carbon Monoxide, hydrocarbons and other nasty gases into harmless water vapor. All exhausts with a cat will do that.

I did not notice any MPG gains with switching my muffler (I had on previous toyotas) so there's no gains to be had. Only switch if you need to or want a more "sporty" sound to it.
