Need Advice re: Changing Wheels (from 20 to 17) on 2012 4Runner Limited

Hi there.
I have a 2012 4Runner Limited which currently has 20" wheels and tire size of 245/60R20. I live in Colorado, and am often driving in snow/ice during the winter. I would like to put a good set of All-Terrain tires on my 4runner which would be good for both highway/summer and winter/snow conditions. The tires I would like to use are BF Goodrich ALL-TERRAIN T/A KO2 Tire Size: 265/70R17.

The problem with the 20" wheels is that there are not really any good all-terrain tires out there for 20" wheels, so I'm considering changing my wheels to 17", and need some advice on this....specifically:

* what are the specs of the 17" wheels that I should be purchasing to be able to install on them BF Goodrich ALL-TERRAIN T/A KO2 Tire Size: 265/70R17?

* what should the wheel offset be on the 17" rim (From online research that i've done, my current OEM 20" wheels have either a 12mm offset or a 15mm offset)

* do i need to worry about other details such as wheel backspace?

* If i purchase the 17" wheels, will there be any issues with installing BF Goodrich ALL-TERRAIN T/A KO2 Tire Size: 265/70R17?

* any other advice/suggestions appreciated.

Hey, I swapped out the 20" OEM wheels on my 2016 LE for the 17" TRD PRO wheels and have been quite happy. It opens up quite a few more choices for Tire brand, size, etc. I bought my wheels through a dealer for $165 each so they're pretty cheap and went with Nitto Terra Grappler G2s. My new set up handles the copious amounts of snow we get here in FL much better.

...so now the main question i have is: what are the recommended specs for the 17" wheels that i should purchase.

(Also note: i believe your 2016 wheel specs may be different from my 2012 wheel specs)

I bought the TRD Pro 17" wheels from Wesley Chapel Toyota in grey and provided them with the part # I found online. I believe this is the part # for the wheels I have...PTR20-35110-GR. They're only 7" wide which wasn't ideal and they did still rub a bit with the stock suspension. I have since switched out the suspension to 6112s and 5100s and done the fender mod and no longer rub with 265 70 17 Nitto Terra Grappler G2s.

I just did this on my 2012 Limited. I swapped my 20in stock wheels (hey, anyone looking for a nice set up stock 20 in wheels????) for a set of 2017 trail wheels (complete with barely driven on tires). It's stupidly straightforward. I had Costco do the swap because I needed the TPMS sensors moved as well. It is a dramatic improvement over the 20 in wheels. There are a few people selling Trail wheels down in Colorado Springs - I'm sure there are some good deals up in Denver as well.

Obligatory picture, because I can. Running 265 70/17, and yes, the hideous running boards are the next thing I need to to "fix."

The older Tundra/Sequoia 17in wheels look pretty good on the 4Runners and can be found for cheap.

You should google the specs on the 2016 OEM trail wheels which are 17". I have the stock wheels with 265/70 17 and KO2s and of course no rubbing because it is stock.

I suggest calling your local Toyota dealership and ask if they have any used OEM 17" rims for sale. They typically do because lots of people buying new/used 4runners from them upgrade to nicer rims when purchasing the 4runner.....My local toyota dealer had lots of 17" OEM rims for my 2012 4runner, and rims were $50 each!

Ok I don’t mind looking stupid. So after browsing these forums. I still don’t have the knowledge to upgrade a stock 2016 lmtd to 17inch trd with 2657017 tires. I still don’t know if they will rub or not. This is without a lift.

With a lift and mods sure anything is possible.

Discount tire shows the 255 tire?

You will have no issues fitting the stock TRD wheels with 265/70-17 tires on any, Limited included, 5th gen 4Runner.

I bought a set of TRD Off Road wheels (the ones that are stock on the off road 4runner) and 275 KO2s for my 16 Limited.

The wheels are 17x7.5. Most other Toyota 17" rims are 17x7 (including the TRD Pro wheels and the SR5 wheels).

I did have to do some fender liner mods to stop it from rubbing in reverse, but that was a pretty easy job.
