need help ASAP! no speedometer

I went wheeling in my 4th gen runner and when I got done I noticed my speedometer doesn't work. My gas hand floats up and down and acts crazy. My rpms work but they act weird. It threw a check engine light along with abs vcs brake light and the light with the car and squiggly lines and I think that's it. I got the codes ran and it came to be the speed sensor on the transmission but would that cause my gas hand to act crazy? The truck drives fine, is it safe to drive it with that speed sensor being messed up? My odometer does not work either. I need some advice asap it's my dd

It would be helpful do disclose the year, engine and model (SR5, SE or Limited) of your T4R. Then second thing to do, is pull out your gauge cluster and verify that none of the harness' came loose from driving over rough terrain. It's a long shot, but certainly possible. If I remember correctly, simply pull off the gauge/dash cover (snaps on and off), followed by pulling the cluster (again, if I remember correctly, it simply snaps off). I think that there are three harness bundles attached.

Since you mentioned you were wheeling before this happened, it might just be a dirty or damaged wheel or trans speed sensor. You mentioned a cel indicating a problem with the trans speed sensor. I would get under vehicle and check all four wheel sensors and associated wiring along with the trans sensor. It is very possible that one or more may have been damaged during the adventure. The ECU uses input from these sensors to monitor vehicle speed and individual wheel speeds. If one or more of them are damaged, all kinds of weird things could be the result.

Did you check the three wire harness connections behind the cluster as I suggested? You mentioned several problems with your cluster which does not seem indicative of speed sensor failure. At least rule out the connections out first, as it is relatively easy to do.

No I haven't checked behind the cluster I'm re wiring all the wheels speed sensor/abs wires cause they got pulled when i installed the lift

Start from the top. I lifted my truck and all the lights on the cluster kicked on and stayed on like the abs and traction controle ect... I found out some wires on the wheel speed sensors were stretched too far and came loose, before I got the chance too completely fix that problem I went wheeling and pulled a buddy out and after that, my speedo stopped working and gas gauge started fluctuating, I checked all the fuses and wires and only wires I can see messed up are the wheel speed sensors. It's making the transmission over work itself it seems. I'm re wiring all the wheel speed sensors now and re setting the ecu and I will let you know what happens. I don't understand what could have strained so hard to make the cluster react that way.

Oh, ok. Well, now you're giving us much more information than in your first post. Yes, if you do not first disconnect the ABS wires when altering the front C/O's, you wills stretch and damage them (coming from someone who learned the hard way). But your speedo stopped working after "pulling a buddy out"? I am assuming you did not do this with a winch?

its my understanding the speedometer works off the wheel speed sensors. if those aren't working correctly, neither will the speedo and odo.

Find someone with a TIS Techstream and see if the wheel speed sensors are reading. If not you have found the issue.
