need help deciding a color scheme

I have a 97 Sr5 in the anthricite color. My wheels are pitting and are ugly from brake dust, so I am planning on restoring them (or even having them powdercoated)

My deliemma, I cannot seem to find a color scheme that looks good. I dont want black rims, for multiple reasons. I would prefer not spray them rustoleum rim silver, at that rate I would just clearcoat the alloy. What do you guys think/ have pictures of matching the wheels to the paint?

I think it would look slick, kinda like jeep did on the libertys a few years back (or my camaro for that matter)


Another thing I am stuck on is what color to get my trd off road decal. A place online even lets you select the two colors. I was thinking gloss black and a reflective gold to match my stock gold lettering. I'm just stuck because this is such a weird color to work with.

I have black wheels on mine and I love the look (minus the chrome bumpers). As far as matching the color of the wheels to the body, I've seen it and it looks great. I can't think of the members name off the top of my head, maybe someone can chime in? Also I wouldn't go with gold TRD decals. I think that would just look strange with the Anthracite Metallic paint. Personally, I would paint the emblems black since I think it looks a lot cleaner, and then I'd add a black/red TRD decal. You should post a couple pictures of your 4Runner so we know exactly what sort of color scheme you're working with.

Do you have the black SR5 flares? If so, I think painting them to match the body would look great. The flares being black will add a nice accent. You could always do all the prepping and then paint one to match to see how it looks. If you don't like it, go to plan B.

Whats your aversion to black wheels? Honestly I think your color or other shades of silver look better with black wheels than any other color.

Well, I live in ohio, which means 90% of the time the cars are dusty/dirty. black rims dont really show dirt better than any other rim, but when the tire shine wears off they look akward.

Plus around these parts, it gets you put into the gangster crowd :AK47:


I would love to have a set of 16's off a tundra (split spoke design) and have them gunmetal colored, but I could settle for powdercoating these the same color.

I dont like the red in the trd decal because it does not flow with the anthricite. If anything I could do black and dark grey if it matches the wheels. Other than that or the gold I'm out of ideas.

Not really sure what youre asking here? I have the same flares/running boards as you and this is what it looks like with the running boards off. The running boards are not attached to the flares. Theyre attached by 6 bolts and are very easy to remove

I'm not a huge fan of the split spoke wheels painted black either. I like black wheels, just not those wheels. I'd paint them gunmetal, I think it would look awesome. As far as the TRD decals, maybe black/silver? I do think red would look okay but if you're opposed to it, black/silver would be a nice alternative.

I also think silver/grey decals would look cool since you're opposed to red. I honestly think that you should either get the tundra split spoke wheels or get aftermarket ones rather than paint the three spokes. I'm just personally not a fan of them. With that said, Fightman painted his three spokes a gunmetal color and I think those turned out looking great. It's all about whatever you think looks best, and I agree that Anthracite Metallic is a tough color to work with. Here's a pic of mine just for reference...

^^^^ Yeah anthracite is a hard color to work with, but I like it cause you dont see many of them. But I smoked out all the emblems on mine and got clear corners and turn signals. The only thing id do different is get black rims or color match them. But i kind of like how the anthracite and white/clear go together.

I know the wider style flares had a gap between the boards and the flares, so the above truck (ajspanga) looks slick with them off. Mine would have an empty spot. I'm not sure if that made any more sense or not.

I definately want the split spoke 16 inch tundra wheels eventually, but if I have to buy $500-600 worth of tires I'll have to stick with these rims for now.

As for the trd, I think gloss black and gray would look pretty sick. Also I am buying that plastic dip paint to black out the gold letters. The finish is pitting anyway, so why not.

These are duplicolor Graphite wheel paint, with anthracite center caps. I also have a Black/Red TRD Sticker. If you don't want it to look empty behind the front wheel when the running boards are removed you can just cut the top of it off like I did.

Mine has 228K on the clock.............

There is a mudflap that fills the gap where the running board attaches in the front, you're right. Pitbull gave you a link to them in post #8.

Great! exactly what I was looking for! sorry I missed them in post 8, I was on my teeny tiny phone and didnt get the link to open.

As for the wheels, your truck sold me. I wouldnt mind doing the centers in graphite also, maybe half steal your idea and touch up the yota symbols in anthricite or black. I guess color matching the whole wheel in anthricite would do just as good as black, the graphite is more the gunmetal look I was going for.

Hopefully my buddy at nissan will help me unmount the tires from the rim so I can do a really good job painting them.

Why the holes in the back bumper btw? Seems like it'd be asking for rust back there.

I love this color and it's not played out like black has become with everybody slapping black wheels on everything (I saw a murdered out Prius yesterday) plus black wheels have been the choice for Jeeps (nice and ghetto) for over 20 years around here so I'm burned out on the fad.
Black wheels look good when there's some thought put into the overall color scheme but for me I like the good 'ol factory silver but the graphite would look good on my truck and they aren't too dark that the rims fade into the tires at night.

Last night I used plasti-dip to black my lettering out and painted the spoiler with a gloss black and clearcoat. I ordered a rear bumper today that should be here next week. This weekend I am going to sand the wheels and give it a graphite/clearcoat treatment, so hopefully it starts cleaning up!


I am probably going to take off the side boards too, just wait til next pay to order the front mudflaps to replace the gap.

The rear is looking better! Perhaps paint the end of the wiper arm and hitch. Or just remove the hitch, if you don't use it.
