Need help getting fuel out of water jugs

I got 2 water jugs today. The military 5 gallon ones. But some clown put diesel in them. I wanted to know of there was any way of cleaning it out to the point where I can use it for water ....or at the very least gas. But the end game is hopefully water.

I googled it but I keep getting results for water in gas tank lol

Hopefully my water can isn't one of those "once you go black...." Situations

this is based on no knowledge, experience or expertise. that said, I wouldn't EVER drink from a jug that once stored diesel. I would personally return said jugs and buy brand new ones. once again this is not based on data or facts or anything like that, just what I would recommend.

if they were free then perhaps focus on getting them set up to store regular gasoline, seems like an easier and much safer way to repurpose them. at least it won't potentially kill you.

i would soak it in dawn and rinse, leave them open so whatever is inside can evaporate and repeat. do it until the water comes out with no film. They use dawn on animals they rescue from the oil spills.

also try putting boiling water inside as well.

It only takes 1 part per million to be considered contaminated when it comes to gasoline in water. That's 10^-6 times 5 gallons (18.9 L) which equals 0.0189 mL. There are roughly 0.05 mL in a single drop, meaning if there's 1/3 of a drop left of gasoline then that whole amount of water would be considered contaminated. That's not worth the risk imho. I couldn't find the diesel numbers for toxicity offhand, but I'd imagine they're also formidable. Although if you do decide to go for it, remember the wise words of Ricky: "What, are you stupid? You f***in' taste it. Unleaded tastes a little tangy. Supreme is kinda sour, and diesel tastes pretty good."

Terrible advice and total waste of time. Diesel is nasty, oily, shit.

I would agree that it would be easier to just dump the diesel out and fill them up with gas and be done but no one here has ever got fuel in there mouth when syphoning? I think you'll have a tough lengthy amount of time getting all the taste out and time is money so you may be better off buying new ones however if you've got nothing but time I would just use soap and hot water and keep washing and rinsing

Try selling them to the knucklehead that put diesel in them because he probably needs a couple of diesel cans. His blunder, his cost. Sell them for the price of a couple of good water jugs from REI or your favorite supplier.
Otherwise you or the blunder-head could use them for gas.
When I was a kid my dad always said, "Don't break anything you can't eat".

Agree with most everyone here. Dump them out and fill them with gas. The small amount of diesel left behind will not matter once gas is in them, won't hurt anything at all. I would personally never put water in them that I intend to drink, just not worth it. Got a mouth full of diesel once while siphoning fuel out of a tractor to get a forklift off a job site. Nasty stuff, swallowed some, washed my mouth out over and over, tasted it all day. Every burp tasted like diesel for the next 8-10 hours, not pleasant.

Many moons ago a friend of mine put gas in some aluminum water tanks. We tried forever to get the smell out. Repeated soap and water, sitting for days in the hot sun, rinsed, re-rinsed, re-soaped, bleach, you name it.

Finally we got it to the point where neither of us could smell any odor of gas.

So then we washed it some more.

Finally when we were just absolutely sure there could no trace of gasoline we tossed a match in.......... it sounded sort of like a rocket. How in the world that thing still had a trace of gas in it I will never know, but the match test said otherwise.

Just use them for gas. Don't be stupid, people before you have already covered that ground and the story hasn't changed.

Or the high end Spector water container is about 50 bucks.

I have owned both and the Spector is much nicer after a few months of use.

Trip to the emergency room, or doctors office because of ingesting bad water. I’m guessing about $300 just to look at you for starters with no insurance.
Or maybe you would just ruin a good weekend from drinking bad water.

Agree 100%...never use for drinking water.

Now hauling gasoline? Should be no problem, probably rinse with a 1/2 gallon of gas, and run that through a 2-stroke engine. The tiny amount of diesel left, diluted in gasoline should be ok.
