:help: I'm having trouble installing the cross member. This part is in the way.
What is this part?
Can it be removed?

Thanks in advance for the help.
I'll post pics when I get this finished.

That... is a thing... Its purpose, is to be there?

A more helpful edit here... Its called a Transfer Dynamic Dampener, basically a weight to help reduce vibration. You can remove it and not have anything go ka boom, maybe the driveline will vibrate a bit more? Not exactly sure how a dangling rubber weight helps dampen vibration there...

Is that dampener something that is added only to the transmissions that are found to have some intrinsic vibration ? Not sure that mine has it and if it does (if all vehicles get them) then perhaps you need to look at your mounting location for the cross member because I encountered nothing between the frame rails to impede the installation on my rig.

The issue I ran into was getting it to fit between the rails at the ends of the cross member; that involved a bit of trickery. (and grinding)

If you look at this picture, it does not appear that you should be getting any interference from the transfer case...

I really don't think it does much. I bent mine on a wheeling trip last year (it dangles really low, so it's the first thing to go) and posted up here. The consensus was that nobody really seemed to think it was an issue. I've also had no issues driving with it bent.

Thanks Guys,
I was following the install on the bud built site. There was no mention about removing this. Hopefully when I remove this the vibration isn't to bad. Will let you know.

I can't for a second believe that Toyota would go through the trouble (and cost) of installing them if they felt they were of no benefit.

That's the weird thing though... Toyota HAS done stuff that has no real benefit.

Take our transfercases, the V6 & V8 cases are EXACTLY the same, the difference is in a slightly different input shaft & a longer shift rod with an extra fork on it for the V6.

I used to think that maybe the V8 was a different unit completely... but its not, which in my mind makes no real sense as they could have easily left it selectable like the V6 and saved money on tooling and production of an identical transfercase with a slight modification that seems pointless.

So I am sure Toyota put the money and effort and design into that thing... but the question is, does it really matter? Many members have run without it... and they don't even notice anything. :suspicious:

So... yeah, I don't know what to think anymore... :dizzy:

You may well be correct Black, but I worked with the Japanese for ~ 14 years in the Liquid Natural Gas and shipbuilding industries and I can assure you that they engineered the livin' s**t out of that dampener and had it installed for a very specific reason or to address a very specific problem.

These rigs were designed and built in Japan so its my guess that no one in this country really knows all the engineering details behind their construction. There's lots of mysteries and "I wonder why they did this... ?" where I'm betting the only way to find the answers, would be to take a trip to Japan.

I agree with the Toyota never does something for no reason. Other than those stock skidplates... Designed by accountants I fear. :)

I have removed those dampeners but never felt good about it. What we do in the shop is remove the large bolts that hold them to the tcase, and move the whole thing up, installing it with just one bolt with thread locker on it. So lower hole in the damper gets the bolt and that gets threaded into the upper threaded hole in the tcase. Works fine and it does not seem to upset the perfect balance that Toyota designed in. :)

Happy New Year to all!
