I agree with the Toyota never does something for no reason. Other than those stock skidplates... Designed by accountants I fear.
I have removed those dampeners but never felt good about it. What we do in the shop is remove the large bolts that hold them to the tcase, and move the whole thing up, installing it with just one bolt with thread locker on it. So lower hole in the damper gets the bolt and that gets threaded into the upper threaded hole in the tcase. Works fine and it does not seem to upset the perfect balance that Toyota designed in.
