Need help on clarifying the stuff for TBU

So I checked out the thread: Hard to find Specs, Info & Measurements on 231mm 13WL Tundra Calipers & Rotors

but I'm confused because a lot of people have different combinations.

Sorry in advance if I ask too many questions, I'm not too car savvy.

Notes: I'm planning on buying all the parts needed and having my mechanic do it for me so it's critical I get the parts right.

Here's my questions:

1. My 2001 Limited is my Daily Driver. I don't tow or offroad. What size of caliper should I get? 199mm or 231mm? I'd like the one that can clear stock spare just in case I ever get a flat tire. What's the brand and what year of Tundra caliper? Where can I get the ones that are powder coated already and just ready for install?

Also I have 16 inch wheels I think, whatever the OEM size is. I'd like my mechanic to avoid having to cut the dust shield. I heard some ppl didn't need to.

2. What year Tundra rotor do I get? some ppl say 2001 and some 2005. I'm confused.
Where can I get em? (I buy everything online these days)

3. I heard that Wagner Thermoquiet are pretty good brake pads. Anyone tried them? I'm assuming I still get the pads for my 01 4Runner, not Tundra.

I think these are all that's needed right?

The 231MM will not clear the stock spare. However, that does not mean it's completely rendered useless when you do the upgrade.
Scenario: You have a flat on the front tire. Put the spare tire on one of the rear wheels, then transfer that rear wheel to the front.

Order the brake calipers for a 2005 Tundra 4X4 V8. When you buy them, look for the "13WL" stamp on them. If it has a different number, chances are they gave you the calipers from the earlier Tundras. Happened to me.

I went with OEM Toyota brake pads. I've never had Wagner pads, so I can't comment on them.

Unless you have the 5x skinnier spoked rims, you must get the 199 mm calipers if you don't want to grind down your OEM rims to fit. I think you have the correct rims to fit the 231 mm.

What I did is match the brake pads, rotors and calipers off the donor Tundra. This will ensure complete compatibility. I got mine off of an 06' Tundra v8 with 30 k miles. I also made sure that I got the steel brake lines that connect with the caliper. You will need those as well. I got OEM brake pads because I know they are high quality.

To ensure correct operation, make sure you clean the brake hardware well. The pins that hold the pads on should be shiny. I would recommend buying new ones at the dealer.
 
You don't need the brake lines. The stock 4Runner ones bolt up. I just did this this weekend. The cutting of the dust shield isn't anything to worry about. I removed maybe 2 square inches on each side. It you take your time it isn't even noticeable and everything looks stock. I used Brembo rotors off amazon, Akebono pads, and Napa calipers. Everything is very solid now.

Interesting on the lines, my runner ones were not even close. Luckily I had the ones off the tundra.
 
What was the stamping on your calipers? Mine were the common 13WL, but I believe there is a kinda obscure one that does have a different line mounting.

For the brake pads, do I also have to order them for a 2005 Tundra 4WD V8?
I thought only the rotor+caliper have to be for the tundra. lol

look up on youtube, "speedy's garage" for 4runner brake upgrade. I followed this with the exception of replacing brake lines. the 231 calipers I found were from an '05 tundra so I ordered rotors & pads for '05 tundra.

I did mine kind of recently. I got everything from NAPA. 05 4x4 V8 Calipers, rotors, and pads. The calipers had a core return of $55, so make sure you get the old ones back from your mechanic and take them back. Just don't say anything about them not being the same kind and they should take them. Cutting the dust shield is no biggie, 10 mins with a Dremel and it's done.

Here's a few things I've learned from the swap and about brakes in general:

Cheaper pads will squeak over time. If you're ok with that then the Wagners will be fine. If not, I recommend getting better pads, and even better if you get pads with shims and grease. The Toyota ones are the best and will last a very long time but will set you back $85 or so with shims.

Also, Rock Auto has the cheapest prices for calipers that I found. They currently have a set priced at $49.79 + core charge. That'll save you about $60. RAYBESTOS Part # FRC11549. Just look under 2005 Toyota Tundra 4.7L engine. And yes, you can return the 4Runner calipers as a core. The only downside is they will take $17 off for shipping (plus shipping to get to you) so the savings gets knocked down from $60 to about $25 or so. All reman'd calipers are basically the same, they just paint them and change the hardware. That reminds me, make sure your calipers have the hardware should come with new pins, clips and 4 of the "M" shaped anti-rattle clips (not just two, per Toyota). Will help reduce any brake noise.

Lastly, do you have the 5 spoke "star" rims or the 6 spoke "split" rims? The 6 spoke ones will not fit without grinding or running a spacer.

Talking about the calipers, do I have to do something extra like powder coat them to prevent them from rusting? I've seen some posts where people had red ones, didn't know if it was just there for looks.

How do I make sure that the calipers have the 4 of the M shaped clips? They usually just state whether it comes with hardware or not. If it doesn't, can I just go to the dealership n describe the caliper pins and they should have them?

I have this kind of rims do you think I'm ok?

Buy the calipers from NAPA. They are still running their "bucket sale" I believe. You buy a bucket there for $4 and then whatever fits in the bucket gets 20% off. So I bought a bucket, got 20% of the total cost of the caliper including the core charge, and then when you go to return the core you get full price on the core, not just the 80% that you paid. In the end I paid about $70 each for the NAPA calipers. They come with everything and they have a good coating on the calipers too. Many people have commented on the coatings on the cheaper calipers wearing off quickly and then rusting, but I haven't heard anything bad about the NAPA coating. It seems very durable. You only need one of those clips per side. The new NAPA calipers come with 2 pins each, 2 cotter pics, and one of those clips.

I used the Akebono pads as I have heard of people saying the Wagners click when braking in reverse. They're $45 on amazon so they're pretty cheap and very quality. They are OEM pads on some vehicles even and comparable quality. So far the braking is great with the akebono pads and brembo rotors.

Yeah the bucket sale is only in store. All calipers are pretty much the same, so you can't go wrong. Any powder coating will do just fine, you'd have to drop them or scrape them around I would think to get the paint to come off. I will admit mine are red... and that was by choice. But they did have a great sale on the red Powerstop calipers on Rock Auto, which is what I went with.

You can just install one anti-rattle clip on each side and that is better than nothing. However, the instructions for installation of the Toyota pads I bought did call for 2 on each side for 4 total. I was gonna do just 2, but the other side was loose and would have moved around a little. Any clips and hardware from any store will be just fine, all they are is bent metal wires anyway. Not like Toyota ones are any better than anything else out there!

Those rims will work just fine with no changes needed, so you're good there!

I agree with the coating on the NAPA's. Mine are still as black as the day I installed them. However, I got cheap ones (Raybestos IIRC) off amazon for the wife's truck and they were rusty in a few months. I run the Bosch quietcast pads (non-chamfered), Brembos in both trucks. Stoppin' like champs!
 
Got my rotors at Camelback Toyota Parts - Genuine OEM Parts - Free Shipping instead of Toyota Online Parts | toyotaonlineparts.com because camelback's shipping is way cheaper. Got 2 Rotors for 05 Tundra V8 for $128.44 shipped.

Got my calipers at NAPA today for $282.82 then I'll get $111.12 back once I return my cores which equals to $85.85 per caliper.

I think I'm sticking with the Wagners QC976 for now, I heard good things about them and they have a lifetime warranty. Got em in Amazon for $30.49.

So far I spent $330.63 only on parts. How many hours do you guys think the labor should take for this TBU? My mechanic is pretty good but charges cheap :D
