Need help troubleshooting light and beeping

SOLVED: SEE POST 11

I am the new owner of a very tired 2008 T4R SR5 4WD. I drove it for about 1000 miles since buying, and noticed the lower intermediate steering shaft was binding.

I just finished replacing the steering shaft. I also replaced the CV axle at this time with the NAPA NCV 944052.

On the test drive, once I hit about 10/15 MPH, 3 things happen all at once:

Slip indicator light illuminates
A Beeping sound
The ABS fires. I can hear it and feel it thru the brake pedal.

Any idea what went wrong? This is a new symptom, and only occured since performing the above work.

Any advice is welcome.

I'm guessing you have a bad connection or damaged the wiring (or the sensor) to the speed sensor caused by when you changed out the CV axle.

All the the symptoms you mentioned are all affected by faulty or non-working speed sensors.

My issue is only intermittent. all hell breaks lose for a few seconds, then everything turns off. It does this every few hundred feet. Still think its the wheel speed sensor wire?

It would of been helpful if you had mentioned that in your original post, we aren't mind readers here after all.

But since this wasn't happening before you changed the CV axle, then it's very possible for it to be a issue with the sensor.

You may want to check for trouble codes, if it triggered some that will help narrow it down.

When you replaced the steering column shaft did you treat the clock spring like it was fine china? The clock spring is part of the ABS, Skid and air bag system. It detects the steering wheel angle.
Also, as others have mentioned, it could be the ABS speed sensor or the wire. Did you remove the sensor before you removed/installed the axle? If not, you may have damaged the sensor. It definitely can happen. Remove the sensor and inspect it for any damage. If no damage is present, clean it off and reinsert it. Make sure the wire clips onto the sensor real well when connecting it. You can also accidently stretch the wire and damage it. The wires are of a very small gauge.

Thank you for the reply. I did not touch the clock spring, that I'm aware of. I replaced the lower intermediate steering shaft, and went no higher. Im sure I wasnt gentle, though, so I may have caused damage to the clock spring.

I just took it out for another test drive, disabling the traction control, and the symptom is the same, around 10-15 mph, the abs engages, slip warning light comes on and I hear a beeping. This only lasts for a second or two, then it all stops.

Sensor wire could have gotten stretched, causing the intermittent symptoms. Maybe some grease got on one of the sensors?

Just as a long shot, try doing the zero point calibration.

The VSC in some of these trucks are sensitive.

My money is still on a damaged sensor or wire.

If a problem pops up right after work has been done on a vehicle the FIRST place to look is the new work. ALWAYS. EVERY TIME.

I'd pull the ABS codes to see if it's not seeing one of the two front ABS sensors. The ABS solenoids firing inappropriately makes me think that it can't see the sensors, or the sensors are full of magnetic particles that can easily be wiped clean.

To close this out, here's what happened since I last posted:

i tried to pull the wheel speed sensor at the wheel with the new CV axle. I broke it. Once a replacement came, I installed it and took it for a test drive. Same exact symptoms.

I then tried the steps to complete the Zero Point Calibration 4x. I just failed. I tried on 2different days, and thought I was being careful.

Off to the dealership she went via a tow truck. In short order, the dealership merely cleared the ABS codes and completed a "yaw rate calibration" which I assume is the zero point calibration by another name.

Problem solved. Cost me $189 and some gray hairs.

Thanks to all who posted. I appreciate the input.

Yes, thanks for resolution. Recognizing symptoms and posting fix will help the shade tree mechanics.
