Need help - wheel and tire size

Hey guys,

I currently have a 2000 SR5 with 15" wheels on it. I am not really keen on how low it looks like its riding. I want to raise it a little (in the most cost effective way). I also need new tires because my are starting to sidewall crack. I am pretty new when it comes to wheels and tires and stuff so any help is appreciated!

So here are my questions:

1. My current tire size is 225/75/R15. Can I put a bigger tire on it to lift it without doing any other mods? Like a 235/75/R15 or a 31/10.5/R15? Or something else?
How would that effect my handling, breaking, MPG, and Speedometer?

2. is it a better option to change to 16" wheels and get tires to fit those? I don't really have the cash to do that at this point, but I am wanting to know what is best.

3. Will one of the above (new tires or wheels) give me more height or will my car need to be raised?

Any other suggestions or cautions?

Also, I don't really do any off roading or anything. It's a daily driver. I would just prefer it to be lifted a little higher... can I get a witness?:frog:
 
go with 16" wheels and a 265 70 16 tire, you will get your slight lift and be at the largest tire that came stock on the 4runners...

are you 4wd? and 4 or 6 cyl?
 
31x10.50x15 is the biggest without changing wheel size or using wheel spacers. Pretty close to the 265/75/16 that is the biggest 16" that will fit stock with no lift. Tires for 15" rims are a bit cheaper too. No fitment issues with the 31x10.5, but braking will suffer slightly, and your speedo will likely read a couple mph slower than you're actually going on freeway speeds. Negligible under 40mph-ish.
 
Removing running boards will help the look. My buddy's got 31/10.5/15's on his Taco and he's having a hell of a time finding a couple used ones to throw on there temporarily. There's a lot less brand options it seems for that size as well. In my experience, it's much easier to get tires for 16" rims. Finding a set of OE 16" 4Runner rims shouldn't be too difficult or expensive.

What would you sell them for? I am needing something soon as the side wall cracking on my current tires is getting pretty bad.
 
Another quick general question...

When shopping for new wheels what factors do I need to take note of in order for it to fit my 4R (all the different sizing and spacing, etc)?

Do would any 16" wheel fit my car?
 
Also, if I keep the 15" wheels which tire is a better option?
235/75/R15 or a 31/10.5/R15?

Do they cost and preform the same?

I'm sorry, that might have been a bit vague, I'm talking about front lift spacers, not my spidertrax. I'll sell those for $100 I ran 285/75's with those spacers. You may have to beat back the pinch welds but that's another conversation for another time depending on how big you want to go haha. If you're inquiring about my wheels. they're painted matte bronze in decent condition $400.

As far as spacing, stock wheels have 4.625 back spacing I know SCS offers 4.5 back spacing and 3.5 backspacing. or atleast they're going too, different wheels offer different back spacing. I know with 3.5" back spacing you wont rub on your UCA's or anything of that nature.

oh yeah, with my stock wheels & spidertraxt I'm technically running 3.375 back spacing I don't rub on anything but I did have beat down my pinch welds. I hope thats enough info/ helped you.

Can you guys point me to any pictures of 4R's with 15" wheels and either 235/75/R15 or 31/10.5/R15 tires?

Which would be a better option? Do they cost the same? How do those tires preform differently?
 
Can't say I've ever seen a Runner with 15" rims in person. I do know I got an OEM split spoke alloy 16" (matching my rims) to replace the spare steelie. Got it off E-Bay for $25. A 265/75/15 tire is 30.6 x 10.4 so you're really close to the 31's and might be easier to find or better manufacturer options if that helps any -
 
Your gonna have better luck finding more and batter tires in the 16" wheel size, 15" tires for trucks are getting out-dated and thus the selection is dwindling. Yes you can still get a few different sizes of tires in the 15" diameter, what size and what type of tire is really limited.

From my research, I think I am going to go with 31/10.5/15 tires. I have looked and haven't been able to find any 16" wheels for sale on craigslist or ebay and I need new tires asap.


With the 31's, will those work without any other mods (regearing, lifting, etc)? I am hoping I won't see my gas milage suffer :pray:

Do you guys know if those would fit in the spare location with a hitch?
 
Those will fit just fine, and should not affect any performance other than giving you more ground clearance. And yes it will fit in the spare location

I am looking at putting on some of these Nexen AT II's today. I had them shipped to my walmart store for free. My budget is not very big so this is the best I could find. Reviews seem good. Any one have a take on these?

I also didnt notice they make a little smoother tread for the road (which is mostly what I do). Do you think there will be a difference in proformace between these two tires?
Purchase the Nexen Roadian HT LT Tire for less at Walmart.com. Save money. Live better.
 
nexen tires are cheap man. i had a set on my previous 4r and no sooner after being put on, they started to chop and make noise. not to mention they had to be balanced periodically. i won't buy them again. i will wait to buy some michelins or whatever other good tire is out there.
