Need help with H4 understanding and driving in snow

How is driving in the snow with this generation?

A 4th gen with an unlocked center? It's excellent... its the same style drive system used in the Land Cruiser

It's up there with Subaru and Audi AWD vehicles.

With appropriate winter tires? A tank.
Zero fear of driving in any snow/ice storm.

Lent my v8 to a friend for month, they went out in each storm to monkey around in big parking lots. Like a Jeep, hop curbs/snowbanks while maintaining utmost reliability when it matters most.

Horrible. They all rely on the driving assists while they stare at their phone screens going 80mph.

LOL! Nice response.

It's also very difficult to get them to buy the right tires... they end up getting offended anytime someone recommends the following symbol required for snow driving.

Seems like someone decided to revive an old thread, but what the heck...I might as well chime in.

Traction control, for the most part, is designed to limit wheel spin/sideways motion when it's not desired. However, 4 wheel drive/traction control/ABS is only as good as what's making contact with the road surface. If you have shitty bald tires, expect the worst.

I have a 2003 Limited V8. When I bought it, it came with newish Goodyear Assurance TripleTred tires. Absolute garbage on snow and ice. I don't know if I have ever driven on a tire that was as terrible, save for maybe BFGoodrich Rugged Trails. Goodyear even claims that they have an ice zone. Suuurrrre.

Switched them out to Goodyear Duratracs. One of the better all-around tires I've ever owned. Great in deeper snow. Good on ice. Winter rated if you need that for mountain passes/local laws.

All that said, I leave the center diff alone unless I'm in deep snow and want to maintain some wheel spin. Otherwise, the 4Runner can be a handful on ice. It will snap sideways making a turn if I'm too hard on the throttle. All that said, traction control and ABS will make little difference if you are going too fast on slick surfaces. Lowering your speed decreases your kinetic energy exponentially.

My best friend got a new Jeep Grand Cherokee last year. Great power, handles well. Until the snow hit and his factory all-season tires made it downright scary to drive. I let him drive the 4Runner and he did some hard accelerations on snow. Those same accelerations in his Jeep were impossible, he said. So, despite being 15 years older than his vehicle and lacking all the bells and whistles and Quadratrac and high tech traction control, it would easily out accelerate and out stop his Jeep.

Tires are the only things touching the ground. Spend your money wisely, take care of them, drive according to conditions.

I drove about 100 miles in central Pennsylvania last month when the "polar vortex" was just moving in and dropped about 8 inches of snow on a saturday evening. I have Cooper AT3's, only about 5K miles on them. I used 4H, center diff unlocked, usually going about 25-30 mph on unplowed, unsalted roads with 5-6 inches of fresh snow. I am not an experienced winter driver. My hands were glued to the wheel and I was nervous as shit, but I never once felt any instability.

i got to try out my kumho at51 (snowflake symbol - so many snowflakes these days lol) in the snow on my way home yesterday. it was about 3" of snow on roads, heavier snow. they did awesome and i was having trouble breaking tire in 2wd. in fact - when i tried somewhat hard to i might have felt the traction systems cut power, but i didnt see any symbol on the dash when this happened or hear any beeps. i have heard the beep before.

in 4h on the way home, unlocked, with snow symbol newer tires and my lift, she felt pretty good. i have a lot of experience in snow, and i felt as confident as my gti and wrx with snow tires on them.

true story, snow tires on 05 wrx, was heading home from a gfs house on the highway during the gnarliest ice conditions i ever saw. in a 25 mile drive i saw at least 40 cars off the road and it was wild. the kicked ass out there especially with the soft tread snow tires. it was as if every part of the road was actually ice on the highway and backroads that night. my boss at the times son ended up in a ditch that night with his camry in fact.
