Need Help With T4R Purchase

Guys, I'm at a stand still here. Which would you pick:

2004 Toyota 4Runner 4x4 Sport V8
22k Miles
21,995

or

2007 Toyota 4Runner 4x4 SR5 V6
16k Miles
23,998

I do mostly street driving, a lot of snowboarding/camping.

Please help.

Do you want to tow? I've heard thats one of the main practical reasons for getting the V8. Other than its the personal preference to pre vs post facelift and some interior differences.

TO be honest, they both sound like really good deals! I'm jealous...particularly for the SPORT. I love my 04, and I will say, that 04 has some LOW freaking miles.

From the information given, it looks like the 2007 is the better deal. However, it all really depends on which one looks better to you and whether or not you need the V8. If you're just doing street driving with some camping and whatnot, I think the 2007's V6 will suffice.

I have a V8 Sport so you know my answer.
Insignificant drop in mileage from the V8 to the V6 IMO.
The V6 should have less understeer with less weight on the steering axle.
I prefer the smooth, quiet linear tq. of a V8.

Just make sure there is nothing wrong with them. They seem to both be good deals. V8 gets slightly lower gas mileage, but it is a hell of a lot of fun. A buddy of mine has an Acura TL, and I beat him racing b/c I have the V8.

I sold my '02 Limited 4Runner b'cuz I wanted the V8. I also have an FJ which has the Toyota V6 and I don't notice any measurable mileage difference. Every time I get into snow, I regret not getting the 4WD. There are other significant differences in options between the Sport and the SR5 that you have not noted...If those differences are not important to you, maybe you'll prefer the '07. I like the '04 Sport over the '07 SR5.

Thanks guys. I've decided to go with the V8. Is there anything I should keep an eye out for when I inspect the vehicle?

If its at a dealer , ask if its certified , ask for a carfax , if you have someone ( mechanic friend ) take him with . Try to bargain in an extended warranty ( Toyota certified only ).

Take it for a good test ride on different types of roads , freeway , ect.... not just around the block.

I'm not much help , but best I can tell you off the cuff. Good luck with it.

No question, I'd choose the 2007. A THREE year newer vehicle for only $2000 more?
Do you do much highway driving? Then that's where the V6 will save you money.

Other things to consider...
- Do you like both colors?
- Do both come with maintainence records?
- Both have the accessories you need?

having to choose between those two; the 2007 makes more sense. It's still under warranty. The body style is a bit more current.(round wheel wells) and value wise it's actually worth more than $2000 difference.

I have a V8 and wouldln't buy a V6 because it's not what I wanted. With only the 2 choices you have, the 2007 sounds like a better deal.

Unless you're comparing a fully loaded 2004 to a stripped 2007, the new one seems the way to go

Thanks for the replies. The V6 seems like a good deal because of the warranty. The V8 has no warranty. However, the V8 does have all of the accessories that I want, plus I am for some reason hesitant to go with the V6. The 04 only has 22k miles on it. I love the way the V8's sound with exhaust, and it's just a better looking truck in my opinion. My other concern on the V6 is that its a black truck and I've heard nothing but horror stories about keeping them clean. That and I live in the middle of a desert (Vegas). So is there any big differences as far as maint goes for the two?

Only thing that comes to mind is that the V8 has a timing belt that has to be changed at 90,000 miles. The V6 uses a timing chain which does not require changing.
