i have hooked up the wires i think properly but no sound comes out. also there is an extra green wire. attached are two photos. one is my wiring and the other is the wiring diagram that i used to wire. i don't know what i am doing wrong. please someone help me. i have a 1998 4runner limited 2wd

Go get the proper Toyota wiring harness. It's only $5.99 on eBay so maybe $10 at Walmart or Best Buy. Oh wait, now you also need the vehicle side of the harness. Ground both vehicle and stereo ground wires to bare metal on the vehicle. Try to do your repairs and improvements in a workman like manner or you will booger your resale value.

Has the factory amp been removed? It sorta sounds like your wiring to the amp, not around it. you should be wiring to the harness this plugs into. Bypass this amp all together. Sorry for the upside down photo

Did power come on? Was the antenna plugged in? Are the grounds correct?

Not sure what plug you're using, but I bought the one that is listed for our 4Runners and had no issue. The colors matched up and then I just connected purple to purple, red to red, etc. It looks like some of your colors don't match.

Is it running through the factory amp as stated above?
Did you wire the stereo harness directly to the 4runner wires? It doesn't look like you used an adapter. As stated above I would get a Toyota stereo adapter and wire that to the wire set that came with your stereo from Walfart. After that its pretty much plug and play.
Also that wiring looks in rough shape I would get that cleaned up and SOLDER your wires and heat shrink each one. If you bought from CLUTCHfield it would have a wiring diagram that you cross reference with the one from the radio.
Its a long shot but just out of curiosity does the stereo have a muting button for taking calls?

I hooked up a Sony HU in my '97, and I'm not sure about your specific wiring, but my "extra" wire was orange. I taped that one off. Luckily for me the previous owner didn't chop out the stock harness, so the $10 Walmart one worked. Where did you find the wiring diagram for your '98?

I had to do quite a bit of soldering on the Sony HU harness in mine, as well as the aftermarket alarm I put in. :flamethrwoer2: Some of the wires were a ***** to get to, but I agree with AZBub, those little splicers you have there may not be the best solution, and definitely not as permanent or as good a connection as soldering the new harness in.

Obviously, the wiring is wrong. I don't know where that little chart you got came from but something is not right.
Here's how you fix it:
1. Go to your local salvage yard or junk yard and get a new Toyota plug (which seems to be missing from the last install). Give yourself about 3-4 inches of wire with the plug.
2. Buy the correct plug to fit from the Toyota plug to your new stereo (Crutchfield is a good place to start they are SUPER helpful for anything car audio!).
3. Un-do all the butt connectors you've got on there and then attach the bare Toyota wires to the used harness you got in step 1 (butt connectors work here but make sure you're using the right ones for the right gauge of wire or they could come loose, soldering is better if you can). Then just plug everything together!
This way if you ever change the head unit again it's all cleaned up and you may not even need to get a new adapter. Trying to match the old wiring to a new harness is extremely hard.
P.S. it's common to have wires from the factory wiring that don't connect as well as from the new harness. Most new harnesses also have a solid blue wire and orange wire (dimmer and something else) that aren't used, yours doesn't seem to though.
