Need Hub kit? Swap Auto for Man Hubs - 1st Gen IFS

Need to replace auto hubs on an '87 4runner. Ordered some 1st gen 26 spline manual hubs. Do I need the kit with the "conversion kit" with hub nut and washer or is that just for switching from ADD? If I do need it, any significant difference between the Warn kit and the Mile Marker kit?

Thanks!

You don't need any certain kit. They just bolt right up. I'd just get stock Aisin hubs, they are better than warn or mile marker. :thumb:

X2! Stay away from those aftermarket hubs. I grenaded 3 warn hubs on my '88. Two of them blew up on runs the day after I put them on. One with stock birfs and two with my Longfields. Picked up stock Aisin hubs from a junk yard and never looked back. 10+ wheeling trips in the last 4-5 years with no problems. and I'm pretty hard on my junk. Just my $.02.

Switching from add to manual is just pull off and put the manual hub on. Auto hubs you have to buy conversion kit. I just did this swap on my 94 4runner and the aisin hubs or awesome. So simple but amazing design.

x2 You need the conversion kit. An 87 that had Auto Locking Hubs is not ADD. Whether you are switching to asin manual hubs or an aftermarket brand you need the spindle nut conversion kit - its a set of a few nuts and a few washers for each side - make sure you also buy a thin walled hub nut tool on amazon made specifically for the truck, they can be primed from amazon for cheap. Its a fast and easy job.

So if I get a used set of AISIN hubs for my 87 that has an auto lock, what other parts do I need to make the conversion? I have surfed thru old threads and see mention of a 'kit', but not what the parts are. I see some parts are still available from toyota parts overstock, I'm just not sure what to get.

Thanks for any help!!

x3, you need a "Spindle Nut Conversion Kit" from any of the hub manufacturers. WARN makes it,

"WARN 29918 Spindle Nut Kit" - this is for all IFS 1986 to 1989. Thats for Automatic Locking Hubs, which is not ADD. ADD came on the 2nd gen runners.

Here is a great explanation and how-to:

Replacing Toyota AUTO Hubs - ORN

You can get the spindle nut conversion kit wherever it is cheapest (they are all the same, you are buying a few washers and nuts). I know WARN makes them, and so does Mile Marker.

The kits are all the same and will work interchangeably with a Aisin, Warn or Mile Marker manual hub.

So if I get a used set of AISIN hubs for my 87 that has an auto lock, what other parts do I need to make the conversion?

Just the above mentioned spindle nut conversion kit. You will have it installed before you bolt on whatever manual hub you choose.

Please know, you will also need a 54mm Hex Locknut Socket For Toyota FJ, LN, And RN Models. You can get the socket on Amazon or a parts store.
