Hey folks! My 4Runner sputtering issues have returned!! I know some of you have said that it could be my coil pack, or an injector. We swapped the coil yesterday, to another cylinder, but forgot if we cleared the code the other day or not...so now waiting for the CEL to come back on so I can find out if it's indeed the coil that needs replacing.

The other option was Injector. If I need to replace an injector....Do I need to replace all 6??

My buddy said something about old injectors not putting out as much fuel as the new one...which may make my truck run funny, if I only change one????

Any help with the subject would be greatly appreciated!

Fightman, the fast answer is no, you don't need to replace them all. If one is bad doesn't mean they all are. That said, it would most likely respond better to all new injectors. Might not be a bad idea to try to run a decent injector cleaner through it if you only replace one.

But I still think it's a coil.

Fightman,

Here is a YT link for fuel injector removal but I think it also states on how to test them per using a DVM or Ohm meter.

You only have to replace one, but if the pockets are still deep after Christmas, I would pull all six and send them to witchunter.com for cleaning. You may want to check with them for shipping rates from Canada.

I'd start by purchasing some good fuel injector cleaner, give it an Italian tune up on a full tank, and see if that helps. But if it is throwing a CEL, it could be an injector. Test it and see what readings you get.

Looks like a nice place to send it...but it's across the border and I believe on the West coast? That's gonna be crazy shipping.

It would cost me $30.00 to ship a box with panhard drop bracket to Cali.....plus the cost of the service....

I'm getting a new injector for around $70.00 (still waiting for actual quote)....

I'll keep it in mind though....should the cost of the 1 injector exceed my expectations.

Besides, I'm still hoping it's just my coil....as it only happens when the truck is hot......

Is it strange that I am still running on the original injectors and coil packs?

I have of course replaced the spark plugs and wires.

Did you check the code when the light came back on? Mine felt like it was misfiring for the longest time but it turned out to be a bad TPS, which cost me $73 at Toyota, and only took a few minutes to replace. It runs great now. Might be something to look into once the CEL comes back on. Should be P0120 if it's the TPS.

beat me to it.

yeah sorry didn't realize you were a "neighbor to the north" I would think someone up there should be able to do a similar service. I just always recommend witch hunter because of the great service in the past.

As for the coil, coil or ignitor is classic "shows up when hot" problem.

I'm on stock coils, injectors, wires, and fuel filter at 193k. I occasionally run redline fuel system cleaner, and replace the plugs once and a while though.

Thanks for the replies guys! I'm really hoping it's the coil pack, as we have already bought the coil and I was already mentally ready to tackle that job.

I've been looking over a couple of writeups on the injector job, and will be ordering the parts today. If it's the coil, I'll just return the injector stuff. If not, I'll return the coil.

Christmas has just wrapped up, and I'm broke! Just wish this stuff would happen when I have money to spend.....but not the case!

You may want to check out the boot that runs from the coilpack to the plug. I believe they are much cheaper to replace. I would think if your coilpack was bad you would have a misfire on two cylinders.

Sometimes the coilpack can misfire on one cylinder. I had this happen on my s2000 and maxima at one point. At least when the car has individual coilpacks per cylinder...

I used to test to see which coilpack or injector was bad by disconnecting one at a time while the engine was running. If the engine idle doesn't get affected by this then that particular one would be the culprit.

Well, doesn't look like my buddy's coming over with his scanner tomorrow. So, I'm planning on putting the new coil in and test driving the truck to see if it runs better. If not, I'm gonna take the coil pack out, and just return it....sketchy I know...but my buddy say's he's done it before!

I'll keep you guys posted. BTW, we called for a quote on some remanufactured injectors.....$178.00 each! I saw this add on Ebay for some Denso Injectors...for $160.00 or so for 6!! Most likely gonna go that route if I need the injectors!

Here's the link.....what do you think?

DENSO FUEL INJECTOR SET (6) TOYOTA T100 95-98 3.4 V6 | eBay

So, it wasn't the coil pack. Are we sure that it is the Injector, or something else that we haven't mentioned yet? Could it be related to the Cheap Timing belt I put in there? How about the coolant? All looks good, but I keep finding small amounts of wet coolant under the top radiator hose......

Any suggestions or input would be greatly appreciated, so far our plan is to swap injectors from cylinder 1 to 5 and see of the code follows.

Thanks for reading....can't wait to see what you geniuses come up with! :)

Seafoam Saves the day!

Alright, so out of desperation, I went to the gas station and got a can of Seafoam Engine Treatment and added it to a full tank of gasoline. I drove it home, let it idle for about a half hour, and then took it for a cruise, to see if it would continue to miss. It seems, that with the Seafoam, whatever my issue was, has resolved itself! Could the injector have been dirty, and the seafoam cleaned it? What about water in the fuel??

I don't know, but so far...she's running like a champ, and I have a huge grin, as it cost me $15.00 to fix my issue!

I'll keep you all posted, as I'll be driving it for the next few days to see if the CEL comes back on, or the engine miss returns.

Crossing my fingers on this one! :reddance:

I just had to replace an injector on cylinder 4 because it was sputtering, and threw a CEL. The stealership tried to say it was all kinds of BS, including my water pump that was causing the problem. Injector replaced and running great now. Good luck

My friend filled up on New Years and his truck ran like crap. Something just awful. We threw in a can of Redline Fuel Injector Cleaner and within 10 miles on the Interstate it was running like a champ.

I don't how many miles you have on the current oil fill, but you may consider changing it since dumping in the Seafoam as well as the fuel filter.

The best cleaner in a can IMHO:

5 Cans Of Bg 44k Fuel System Enhancer | eBay

I was gonna say, if there's that big of a problem with them not shipping to Canada, then you could simply ship them to a trusted buddy here in the 'States, and the buddy could then send them in, receive them, and send them back to you.

Love the redline injector cleaner. When i bought my last MR2 (198k) on it the kid that drove it 1000 miles back for me thought I swapped the motor after running some redline through it. It was night and day difference. Now I run a bottle through every year or so.
