Need More Spring...

ICON Stage 1 Suspension Front and Back with the 52700 Coils on the rear. I have a deck system with the usual trappings inside to go along with the refrigerator, and a 150# James Baroud Nomad 160 bolted to a Baja Rack on top. The springs and suspension have been excellent with that setup whether on Interstate or two-track.

This past weekend I bolted on one of C4's new rear bumpers (Single Swingout/Tire Mount/Dual Jerry Cans) and with that addition I need a bit more spring.

ICON has one stiffer spring, the 52800. It is a progressive rate spring and should offer a great ride in various truck configurations and settings. I am concerned, however, whether it is enough.

OME has three springs--the 2889, 2898 & 2899 for a "Medium Load," 440# Constant Load," and "880# Constant Load." These are constant rate springs.

I don't want the 4Runner to ride like a gravel truck, but need to have enough spring under the rear end for the task. The OME gear has a great reputation for toughness and durability, but can also be harsh.

Does anyone have any experience with a setup similar to what I am running and have a recommendation as to which spring to swap in for a bit more umphhh?

Thanks!

I think I'm probably similarly as heavy as you are. My C4 dual swing out goes on this weekend and I have a set of Dobinson's C59-677V coils ready to go on. It's a variable rate coil for 400# constant rear weight. They also have a heavier variable rate coil for 600# constant. As well as some other options. I can't say how it will work out yet but you can look at it. Mike at Dobinson's is super helpful and very responsive. I do think the Icon will be too light for your application as I considered them as well.

Here's the link to their info:

Please let us know how it works out, I'll do the same after my install

That is exactly the type of information I was looking to find, thank you!

I will call him tomorrow to see what might be possible.

On the C4 Bumper... I love it. Caleb has been great to work with and I think they are turning out some top-notch equipment.

I appreciate your response!

I spoke with Mike at Dobinson's late last week. Walked through the equipment I have bolted onto the 4Runner--both the daily driver gear, and the way we load it for travel. He asked great questions, was obviously knowledgable, and a pleasure to work with. Ultimately we went with a set of their C59-701V variable rate springs. Pushed the button, and FedEx dropped them off four days later.

Stuck them underneath today and I could not be more pleased. The ICON springs I had underneath her were slightly overwhelmed with the addition of the new C4 Bumper on the back end causing some sag and allowing the front end to "hunt" somewhat on the road. The Dobinson's springs stood her back up and have her driving tight and true. The ride is fantastic.

Thanks to the forum for the recommendation. And, thanks, Mike for the great service. I couldn't be more pleased with the outcome.

I got my bumper installed and have only a few days driving on the C59-677V rear coils. How do you feel about the C59-701V? I changed more than just rear coils (Upraded to 2.5" Radflos front and rear and went from 650#-700# front coils)It's a huge improvement in many ways but I couldn't imagine being even stiffer in the rear. How is the ride? Could you give a bit more detail on how much added weight you're carrying? Glad the coils are working out well for you. I'll provide a better review after it settles in a bit

Glad to do so. I am running ICON Stage 1 Coilovers on the front, as well as their Stage 1 Shocks in the back--had their 52700 Springs on the back and they just weren't enough with the new bumper. Not much extra weight up front beyond a Dual Battery setup, a CBI front Skid Plate, and Sliders.

On the rear I have a deck system and a 52 Liter refrigerator (75#). The C4 Single Swing Arm Bumper (235#). Dual Jerry Can Holder (25#). Highlift Jack (28#). And, a 275/70/17 KO2 Spare (80#). Plus, a full Baja Rack on the top (80#). So, daily driver weight has 525# of added weight bolted on.

When traveling we would add a RTT (160#). 40 Liters of Water/Fuel (80#). Plus 50# of gear and tools. For a total of 815# total added weight.

I am really pleased with the ride to this point...not finding it to be harsh whatsoever. The variable rate springs are doing their job and are soaking up the ride.

Mike and I debated going yet one step stiffer...but when we ran the numbers and discussed how and where we travel, we thought these springs to be the best option. To this point, I can't argue with his advice.

Thanks for detailing, I really appreciate it. Here's my list and weights

Hefty Front Aluminum bumper 65#
Warn 10000S Winch 75#
Hefty full set aluminum skid plates 105#
OPOR Sliders 150#
ARB Steel Roof Rack 100#
C4 Dual swing out rear bumper with jerry can holder 250#
ARB 2000 Awning 45#
Hi Lift Jack 28#
285/75/17 Nitto Ridge Grappler Spare 88# with Rim
Jerry Can of Fuel 34#
Jerry can of Water 44#
Tools and Recovery Gear 50# ish
So that's 1034# not including miscellaneous add ons and deductions due to removals (Bumper covers OEM roof rack etc.)

So loading up we add:
4 humans @ 525# and increasing daily
2 Canine's @ 140# and probably increasing daily also
God knows how much all the trip related gear and food weighs weighs but I bet 300# more

So as a daily driver I'm a bit heavier but loaded up i'm imagining we're similar. My previous set up (Toyttec Boss) handled it but just barely without the rear bumper, plus it was really tired after 75,000 miles.
I'm looking forward to seeing how it breaks in and about yours too if you post back.
