Need New Head for my '85 22re 4 Runner

Looking for a New Head for my 22re .......want a Good Reputable Company .
Thanks for Any input ......looking for a Tried & True Company please .
I am looking at a Brand New Head Kit ,New Head,Intake& Exhaust Studs along withMLS Head Gasket & rest of Needed top end gaskets from ToyotaTruckEngine.com...$359.00 Complete with new Cam ,Valves Ect. .....Says it Adds 30!bs Compression for more Power.…...?
Bottom End is Fresh As the Builder Screwed me & did not rebuild the Head so now I am fixing his lack of ...well it is what it is ,I Need a New Head .

I will be using a New Head along with All Intake Studs , Exhaust Studs ,Gaskets & Injectors will be Rebuilt& Flow matched .
So I guess stay away from the APR Auto /ToyotaTruckEngine.com ?
 
I second engnbldr. I don't have a head from him, but I do have a rebuild kit from him.

Also, I've known people who use his heads without problems.
 
3rd for Engnbldr, he's been around for forever, and he does good work!

Of course, if you wanna get all crazy and spend a ton of money on your engine's top half (which will definitely require the bottom half if you wanna do it right!), you can try TCR Performance in Arizona.

I have a complete motor from them and its been running in my truck for about 10 years now, absolutely no mechanical issues whatsoever and it pulls much stronger than a stock motor! Lotsa money for one of their engines though...

Yeah if you want to upgrade and spend the money also LCE there reputation around the race tracks is top notch, also 22r performance
Both of these are pricey
 
Another vote for engnbuilder, bought an assembled head with oversized valves and a cam about 4 years ago,still going strong. Good product and good customer service , and very fair price imo

Side note: rockauto has been good to me for many things I just wouldnt get a head from them

What happened to you man?

They have never screwed up a order and I have gotten nothing but top quality parts from reputable manufactures.
Got my cylinder head from them and it was perfect.

I have spoke with Ted at Engine Builders & will be going with there Pro Head . Can I upgrade my Cam for a Lil Extra power or will it Require Tuning with the Fuel Injection ?
I to use Rock Auto for A lot of my Parts ......just not along these needs ..

Don't get me wrong the 22re is a good engine but don't spend money on it to get more out of it because even $4,000 won't get you a powerful 22re it's just a limited engine.
You can make upgrades all day and still won't hit good numbers to feel a difference.

I think a nice cam is probably the most cost effective upgrade you can make to a 22RE. It WILL make a difference in acceleration and pulling hills, you'll feel it. You won't need any tuning.

I wouldn't ever upgrade the head on a 22RE just for the hell of it, BV is right that there's just not that much there. But as long as you're buying a new one anyway, I think an RV head and cam from Ted is a good call. You'll love it.
 
OK......so just stick with Engine Builders Head , Stock Cam & call it Good , like I said Injectors are going to be Rebuilt & Flow matched .
Everything else has about 18k on it .Thanks for ALL the Help !
 
I dunno, I think a quality cam would be a good upgrade for the money actually! And, seeing that you're putting new valves in, I assume you'll have a new valvetrain too? If so, why not put a new cam in?

I believe I had an "RV" cam in my original engine, it made a nice difference with the Thorley header I'm still using today.

With a good deal of work on the head, such as porting/true benchflow work, you could pick up quite a bit of horsepower! IIRC, the stock engine puts out 90 something hp stock (I believe it was tested at the crank, so around 80 at the wheels), whereas you can pick up 20-50hp with a completely rebuilt engine with a cam, porting and intake (larger throttle body). All of this can be done without any aftermarket tuning gadgets or standalone ecu.

I'd love to get my truck on the dyno this spring to see what its actually putting out, but I'm sure its over 100hp! The engine I bought was rated at 150hp from the company I got it from, and with a 15% drivetrain loss, I'd be happy seeing anything over 120hp!
 
i purchased a cylinder head from engbldr a few weeks ago and i gotta say it's pretty nice. comes with viton valve seals. I noticed it's stamped DNJ on it though. Dont know too much about engnbldr but everyone recommends them if you're on a tight budget. I believe DNJ heads are also available on RockAuto.com..I spoke with CT Engineering of Sonora here in California and the guy says that the camshafts and rocker assembly on JapanEngine.com are quality parts and recommends them. He says he's used them in the past and they hold up pretty good.

After Talking with Ted I will be using his all New Pro Head with a 268c Torkr Cam .
Is a Header worth it & which ones perform the Best & is it worth the $ ???
