the cheapest would be a 3.0 swap.....but not in the long run...it is a junk motor.
If I truly loved my rig and it had a 3.blow I would swap to a 3.4...not cheap
but the 3.4 is a great motor
there is a shop in Oregon that people send their vehicles from all over the us to do a 3.4 swap
look up Toyota swaps only, in creswell Oregon. the have a web site with info, prices etc. they do so many they have a 8-10 week waiting list
or you can buy your own motor and buy from them all the bits and pieces to make the swap and do this yourself and save on labor.
A local gas station attendant is doing this slowly over time, buying the pieces a little at a time when he has the money

my 3.0 just blew and I just threw in a rebuilt one, bought heads and block then just transfered the parts over from my old engine. Spent around 1600

1990 T4r 4x4 w/ auto; 210 miles: Faced with same dilemma; time was an issue. Majority of the shops in my area do not have the special equipment to rebuild, they basically will either replace with a rebuilt or a used, usually find the warranty is limited to months. I ended up going with a fairly local engine rebuild shop I have used in the past, aint cheap but they offer a warranty and from my experience do quality work. Now going on the 1st year of a 3 year warranty and so far Okay.
Had same issue with another family vehicle, again time was an issue. purchased created engine from shop out of Washington, could have delivered to shop, or home w/ 7 year warranty, now going on the 8th year? Anyhow, had an urge to chime in.

Can you tell me where you found a rebuilt 3.0 so cheap?
