Need new tires, any suggestions....

looking to replace my wife's tires on her 08 4runner with no mods. I was looking at the BFGoodrich Rugged Terrain, not that she goes off roading, but she does like the aggressive tread pattern. She has asked me to lift her 4runner, so do I go with a bigger tire? (currently have 265/65/17). I thought about a 2.5" lift, any help would be greatly appreciated.

285/70/17 BFG and 2.5-3.0 inch lift will work. Search for more from ppl who have this setup.
 
BFG rugged terrain are great tires. I have been looking for a new set of tire next summer and have read many good reviews about them. Personally I have a 3+" lift on my vehicle but decided that I will not put bigger tires on it. There are many problems with bigger tires: recalibration of speedometer, inaccurate odometer, transmission regearing,...
Plus stock tires on a 3+" lift 4Runner don't look that bad.
 
Where are you? Do you need the severe snow designation (e.g. Canada) or do you live in FLA where it's always sunny?

Assuming that you see snow, being in West VA, I would suggest Goodyear Wrangler Duratrac's considering that they are severe weather rated. If you don't lift it then 265/75/17 is great, if you do lift it 2.5-3", then 285/70/17 would look more proportional. I have a 3rd gen 4runner with the Duratracs in a 285/75/16 and have loved every bit of the now 23k miles on them. They are aggressive looking enough without the quick treadwear and noise of a mud tire, handle the rain and snow like it's dry pavement, and are really just the best all around tire out there IMO. I just went through this whole process. Being in NJ i needed something good in snow, ice and rain. Initially i was going with the Bridgestone Revo 2s or the BFGs All terrains, but then i read a number of articles and reviews saying that Mud tires (in particular the BFG all terrains) suck big time in snow and ice. A big turn off for me. In the end i went with General Grabber AT2s. Look really aggressive, and are also snow flake rated. So far they have been excellent in the wet, cant comment about Snow yet though. One thing to note is the noise but i can live with that i just turn up my music!! I would buy them all over again. (plus look out on tirerack, sts or the manufactures website for rebates and coupons! i got $50 back.) Good luck.

Ps. mine is a stock sport if i had a lift i would have bought Duratracs!

If you do end with with a ~2" inch lift and don't want to deal with trimming there is always the 255-75-17 which is a 32.1" tire that doesn't require any trimming. I opted for them as I wanted to retain my splash guards and didn't feel like trimming. It looks good and clears everything really well.

The Bridgestone Revo2 is a great all terrain tire. i ran them in NH winters with great success. Another good option is the firestone destination at. I checked out the hankook at tire, but it appears reviews are great in the beginning, but fall off quick after 15k miles. All of the tires mentioned come in the 255-75-17

if you want a deal on Bridgestone or firestone tires they do buy 3 get 1 free if you open a firestone/Bridgestone card.

Ive had mine for a few months and they are great! BFG knock offs. I have yet to read a bad review about them.

My neighbor just bought some. He can't get them balanced worth a damn and he is doing the method recommended by tread wright. He had trouble with his first set last year, but after tread wright sent him 4 replacement last Time he got those balanced. I think his wife is going to kill him though. She told him last Time after all the balancing issues on her truck she didn't want him to buy another set. I will have to wait and see if she sticks a for sale sign on his truck...

NO I am not high at all. Look at the pictures of my 4Runner right after icon stage 1 lift (4" gain) with 265/65/17 stocks. IMO it doesnt look "incomplete" at all.




Lifting is to improve ground clearance. Putting a bigger tire will impact your transmission gear and lower your torque (plus all the problems with speedometer calibration...)
 
Well if you like that more power to ya, but your ground clearance is the same as it was stock. Now your body and frame is higher off the ground, but the axles, etc are the same height
