I'm very strongly considering a set of those for my 4Runner. They get mostly great reviews and are rated for like 60,000 miles But, everything I've read says they'll last longer. I believe any good (name brand) tire is going to be in the $200-$250 range. People go all coo-coo for Duratracs and BFG AT's but I haven't heard of anyone getting a set to last as long as I would expect the Michelin's to last without sever increases in road noise. Here is the list of tires I'm considering when I change out in the next month or so
BFG AT KO's (not sure if I want to deal with road noise and loss of mpg)
Michelin LTX AT2's (not sure if they are capable enough off road)
Nitto Terra Grapplers (not sure how long they'll actually last and there is no tread life warranty)
Firestone Destination AT's (had a set on my work truck and they were uncomfortably loud when they wore down - but I have no idea if they were ever rotated or not since it was a loaner while my main work truck was in the shop for a couple weeks)
Yokohama Geolander AT's (these are just a cheap alternative for an AT tire
EDIT: I plan on stepping up in size just a bit from 265/65/17 up to 265/70/17

Those tires do look a little on the small side to me. I would bump up a bit if I were you. But that is just what I like

I gotta tell ya man I love BFG and nitro a/t tires, they will all get similar mpg, wear, and capabilities. I wouldn't go with a street tire or rugged trail at all though IMO
 
ok, so tires are expensive! Not sure what you guys are smoking, but I cannot afford to put $1400 in tires! I was told that my 17's are the reason that they cost so much. Has anyone tried going to a 16 wheel and run a larger tire? Just Asking.......

1400?? Set of 4 of a lot of these sets will run 700-900 range, depending on what you buy.
 
Yeah. Those Michelins are crazy expensive. They're good for an all season and will last a long time (70k miles) but you have to pay up front. Continental makes a similar tire that gets great ratings and cost a fair bt less. I got my Cooper AT3s for around $750 out the door (found a good deal,locally, had to hunt for a while). They're a great all season AT tire rated for 55k miles

Easier to justify $750 for the Coopers to the wife than $1200-1300 for the Michies.

Plus, the Coopers are Made in The USA. Can't say that about Hankooks. :)

Psh, tires are all personal preference. No matter what anyone tells you about performance, offroad handling, etc., do your homework on the design and PRIMARY application. If your a paved road goer more than the dirt trails, dont even consider mud tires. All terrains are nice for seasonal offroaders. Every tire company competes to put out the same thing in a different package. It literally goes to your own wants and needs. Your really lifted but dont seem to have the clearance for anything bigger.

Making plans on trimming those wheel wells or going even higher? You will rub like a champ without mods, obviously.

Yup, 83k and still going. They hit the first wear bars around 80,000 and if I wasn't heading into snow season, I'd probably get another 10,000 out of them.

Actually for severe snow, they held fine until about 70,000 (not to the first wear bar) but then again, me screwing around cost me a new bumper (but got me motivated to buy a Shrockworks one, so fair trade). Probably 6" to 12" of snow (and falling!) on a severe grade that the Nevada Highway Patrol shutdown (Kingsbury Grade in NV) last winter. I was able to get up, around two road blocks (unplowed neighborhood streets) and up and home, passing about 5 cars stuck on the side of the road - w/o plows or tow trucks around. The road was expected to be shut down for the next 4-6 hours, and I wanted to get home.

They are wear rated at "520" but we all know how much of a crap shoot that is (520 for one is 260 for another) but these have held up to some pretty nice abuse, and infrequent rotations (5,000 to 10,000 on average).

I'll see if I can get some daylight pictures up of the tread in the next day or so.

IMO, we have choices. Obviously traction is important (e.g. motorcycle TKC-80's) but also wear (hence, motorcycle K60's). No one wants to pay for tires, the tax, the mounting, the hassle of ordering from Tirerack, etc. if they can avoid it.

So me getting 80,000+ out of these... Gravy.

Consumer Survey Results By Category -- Tire Rack's survey, they're #4 but w/ 80,000 that's crazy wear.
 
I put Destination A/T from Firestone on my 2008 4Runner. At the time 2 years ago they had a good sale. I thought they would be much better but hey you learn as you go. People on this forum have some really nice tires on their 4Runners
 
I am ok with the lift and gaining some extra tire under the wheel well, but I really didn't want to get deep into mod'ng the fenders. I really would like to lift about 2.0-2.5". and a slightly beefy'r tire. I was gonna look into dropping down from a 17 to a 16 to cut off some of the cost. Yes, it will cost me up front, but it will level out over time.

Also consider the Cooper AT3's. I just recently got them and I'm very happy.

I too have the Cooper AT3's. Currently about 40k miles on them. Excellent tires. I got mine at $165/each. The comparable Michelin was running over $200/each.
 
I have the General Grabber A/Ts, have put about 50,000 miles on them and they still have more than 1/2 the tread left. They have done pretty well in the sand/mud/snow here in central and south jersey.
 
Dropped an order on Tirerack for another four Goodyear Silent Armors.

Here's an image of what my tires look like ~83,000 miles. Basically on severe snow rated tires (snowflake) the first wear bars designate that they'll only behave like a typical M&S and isn't rated for severe snow any more.

So for the first 61,350 miles, Michelin Cross Terrains, then the GYSA (snow flake rating, playing on some rocks and highway driving) which have taken me to 145,000 today.
 
I bought 265/70/17 COOPER ST MAXX from Discountire 940.00 out the door w warranty incl and shipped. They only have about 1000miles on them but they are 3ply sidewall, E rated and pretty wicked offroad. I have Bilsteins and the ride is perfect i think. Run 37psi and i dont feel its rough at all. I dont feel they are loud at all.
