Need some advice on making my Runner sound "aggressive"

Just bought a 2005 4Runner Limited (4x2) & I'm head over heels for it. I want to make some after-market additions to it. Any advice/recommendations on parts, brand, installation for muffler/cat?? Don't want her to sound obnoxiously loud, a nice deep rumble would be on point. I'd greatly appreciate it.

just put flowaster on mine last week with custom pipe, very mellow low sound. highway noise is about the same, idle sounds great and even better when you smash the skinny pedal

v6 or v8? theres a big noise difference
 
I've got a V8 with the full cat-back Magnaflow system and it sounds GREAT! I have gotten lots of compliments on it. Go with Magnaflow.
 
Super charge it but it is expensive. Look on YouTube for 4Runner vs. Mustang GT, the 4R sounds awesome and makes the Mustang look foolish.
 
I just had the muffler swapped yesterday with a Magnaflow 12586, same model I had on my 2010 4Runner. Sounded great with the V6, sounds even better with the V8. It's fairly quiet at cruising speeds, and has a nice throaty sound when accelerating.

I can guarantee a Flowmaster will have more of a rumble, but in my 2008 Tacoma I tried a Flowmaster 40, 50 and 70 series and all had major drone while cruising on the fwy. Couldn't really have a conversation inside the truck. I've been pleased with the sound and small gain in power from the Magnaflows. The 4Runner just seems to breath better, I can get up to speed much quicker compared to the OEM muffler.
 
I second the Magnaflow full Cat-back. That, along with a Volant CAI, make my truck sound so sweet. And in an aggressive, not obnoxious way.
 
You will get excellent sound from a cold air intake/air charger, like the K&N, lots of sound gained there. As for exhaust I went with the Gibson Stainless steel system for $315, the car sounds great! :banana:

As for the muffler, I hope you have the V8 because the V6 isn't going to make a deep rumble. If you go to youtube and search for the motor and muffler you're thinking about you can find most sounds. It may be on a taco, fj cruiser, or tundra but as long as the motor and muffler are the same it will be pretty close.

I had a one chamber, now three chamber flowmaster, on my Z71; I think both sounds good. I think the one chamber sounded much better but it was LOUD.

I had a borla muffler on my V6 4runner but I took it off because the V6 exhaust is kind of annoying to me... which reminds me, I have a used (for 2 months) Borla muffler thats the right size for sale if you're interesed ;):
 
I love my K&N CAI and have the same thoughts as gaterose...the v6 just doesnt produce the exhaust tones I want. I had a Dough Thorley on my 98 with HF Cats and it was way too loud for my taste. I hated that people would hear it, turn their head and see me going slow. Bad for hangovers too, can't turn it down!

The K&N is great for me because its a very "on-demand" sound. I've heard this about gibson and seen it on a jeep and actually had a gibson muffler but sold it after I put in the K&N and was satisfied.
