Need some advice

First off I know this comes up a lot, and thank your for your patience and answers

Hey guys, I've been lurking and looking at 4runners for a while. I've been a long time Toyota fan, mostly the MR2's. In the last week I lost both of my MR2's. One is now undriveable anywhere distant due to a BHG, and I sold the other one right before. So I'm looking at getting a 3rd gen 4runner with a budget under 3500. I'm located in New Jersey so if anyone has anything let me know haha..

Now this is a mostly clean looking one I found nearby (10 minutes from where I work.) He listed it high in price from what I've seen but it is a newer Limited and it looks pretty decent. The only issue is the mileage is on the high side (240k, dont really believe the highway mileage lol). What do you guys think is a fair price? I've looked through the forums and do my own work on my cars so I know generally what to look for, but opinions are always welcome.

In New Jersey, suggest you make sure you check the frame for corrosion....especially the inside of the frame rail on passenger side beside the muffler. Get way under and look straight up.

Agree with buckaroo. If rusted stay away. Also ask for timing belt or anything suspension parts replacement. You'll want to keep that in mind when buying because you may end up replacing them yourself. Other than that its a good price.
 
For sure check the under the vehicle.


I went out yesterday to look at a 2000 4x4 limited with E-Locker.. In the pics it looked amazing!!

In person you could tell it's been repainted and under further review you could also tell the front end has been smashed hard at some point. They even fabricated brackets for the front bumper.

Not a bad looking truck from the photos which made it look better clearly then in person. 180k. had a vibration in high rpms and the interior needed help. Asked the guy if the front end has ever been wrecked and he said no never. Clearly avoided some other questions BUT it had a clean and clear title and no rust under it. was only asking 4500 but would've needed much more in maintenance. Totally not worth it. Wasted myself a 2 hour drive one way.
 
I'm from michigan, also part of the rust belt, but if the frame is solid I wouldn't even haggle the price take it for a mean test drive and make sure that tranny hasn't had the stawberry shake of death!! Or you can keep searching for one that has, I picked up two in the past year both for a grand each w/ stawberry milk shake rebuilt the tranny in my garage for about $600 and I was good to go
 
Went back and read the posting and he's had the radiator replaced that's usually a dead give away he's had the milk shake I would see if he's had the tranny flushed then he for sure had it happen to him and the tranny is on it's way out it'll take up to a year sometimes for that cooler failure to totally wipe out the tranny

Not necessarily. Some replace the radiator as a precautionary step as apposed to the external cooler. Taking a good look at both oils for any indication would be a smart move as the pink death is scary stuff!
 
I'm sure most people replace major components as a precoutionary measure I wish I had on my 97 I've always been "if it ain't broke" kinda guy till the pink death
 
Guy was playing games, ended up getting a '00 limited sport with diff locker for about the same price. With about 170k miles. Pics to come :)
