Need some help finding a remote.

I have a 98 SR5 with keyless entry. I however, do not have the remote for it. I am wondering if there are any remotes on Amazon that will work with a 98. I have found some remotes on Ebay that will work and when I use that product number in Amazon, it says that remote will not work with mine.

Ebay link: 1998 2002 Toyota 4Runner Keyless Entry Remote Fob HYQ1512Y w Prog | eBay
Amazon Link: Amazon.com: KeylessOption Replacement Keyless Entry Remote Control Key Fob Rear Glass Window Compatible with HYQ12BAN, HYQ12BBX, HYQ1512Y: Automotive

Who do I believe?

You don't believe anybody. Unfortunately for you, '98 was a transition year. The factory system that uses that remote linked, was introduced towards the end of the model year. So you might or might not be able to use it. Even Toyota's official TSB (attached) says that only started in '99, but several members with '98's have said they have the factory system and use that remote.

The factory system's brain is built into the Body ECU and the receiver is in the Back Door ECU. The only visible evidence of the factory system is the 'chirper' thingy on the passenger fender, almost back to the firewall. If you have one, get the remote in your link. If you don't, you are wasting your money.

The only remote the TSB's shows for '98 is the gray RS3000 two-button remote. This was commonly installed by dealers/at the port and includes an alarm. If you can locate the 'brain' under your seat or elsewhere, or have the alarm LED in the dash, that is the one you want. MUST BE GRAY, NOT BLACK. Except, if you have the LED AND the factory chirper, then you have a factory system with alarm and need the factory remote.

Be sure what system you have before you order. Full disclosure: I am still figuring '98 remotes out (why do I do this?--I have a '99), and this is my belief at this time.

You can get a new remote that the dealer they are not that expensive and you can program it. You can also get them at Autozone.

Cool, thanks! I have the one under the seat so I'll look for a grey one then. Thank you for taking the time to post such a well written and informative post. It is very much appreciated.
