Need Some help..

So guys I bought my first 4runner a month ago and absolutely love it. However there are somethings wrong with it that I am still trying to fix and some of y'all might know the answers too.

My 4runner
2004 v8 4x4 Limited with 130k

The Nav unit cd player does not work along with most of the audio controls other than the radio/nav/backup camera. Is this a common issues? Is there a fix? Is there a replacement unit that will work with the review camera that anyone can recommend? I don't need the nav but I really want to keep the back up camera.

I have notice some kind of jolt when slowing down to a stop. It feels like something is not disengaging properly. Its not the transmission as it shifts through all the gears properly and the rpms are remain consistent. Anyone had this before?

My ball joints are torn and will need to be replaced. My mechanic who I have used for years and trust advised me to wait about a year. Then replace the entire control arm instead. Does this sound right?

I have updated all the fluids and I am rather light on the pedal. I am averaging 15.5mpg calculating by the pump and 18.0 on the computer. Is this about right?

-Can you elaborate a bit on the Navigation issue? I'm not entirely clear what you're saying; is everything stock or is this aftermarket camera, ect?

-The jolt is probably the "Driveline Thump/Clunk" if you search for those terms you should come up with many threads. There is an updated driveshaft for this issue, but you may want to try greasing your driveshaft u-joints first.

-Toyota says the balljoints should not be replaced individually, but the entire control arm replaced as a unit. That being said, people have had pretty good luck getting just the balljoints and replacing them (make sure the ones you get have retaining clips!)

-15.5mpg isn't bad for the 2UZ-FE equipped 4Runner, the trip computer always seems to be a tad optimistic.

So the Navigation issue. all of my equipment is stock. The actually navigation and all controls work for the nav work fine. The back up camera works. The radio works you can scan, change the station, and so on from the unit + the steering controls. However pretty much everything else does not work. The CD player does not load discs, I am unsure if there is one stuck in there from the previous owner. The ability to set presets and adjust audio like bass and treb buttons do not work. I am pretty sure the unit is toast. I am hoping there is an aftermarket unit out there that will take the factory back up camera.

It does sound like the head unit has issues, when you press eject on the CD player, does it try to actually eject a CD or does it just not do anything/not make any noise?

As for factory compatibility, I believe most of the aftermarket units do function with factory components, but I also remember hearing that some aftermarket cameras are different voltages than the Toyota stuff (I forget off the top of our head what our units are.) So at this point maybe someone like [MENTION=5149]riceandpho[/MENTION] could chime in?

does the clunking cause any permanent damage?

Mine does it and has pretty much done it since I bought it. I greased it and it went a way for a while. I've never read of any harm being done.

Here's what I did to permanently fix it.
i removed the entire axle, cleaned up the splines (removing all the grease), and regreased it. worked without issue for a couple of years. Now I have the clunking again. I'm scheduling to clean it again.

i dont know much about toyota nav, maybe you can flash an upgraded firmware [MENTION=50507]CookieRoe[/MENTION] might know, he has factory nav. im always in the aftermarket, usually, if fixing the factory stuff cost more, i say swap it out to something better. less time and money spend to fix a old problem. you can also try to pull both the radio fuse out for 30 mins to clear the memory. atleast factory default.

The CD player looks like it gives out on some people. I don't use mine very often, but it works perfectly (so far). As far as your buttons (audio controls) not working, could be hardware issue. Which controls are not working, steering wheel or head unit?? Anyway, going aftermarket is going to be more expensive then this repair.

The problem is that our older Navigation units (pre-Entune) use a "Map DVD" to update the software. Also, once you put an updated software disc you can't go back (so be careful about borrowing your buddy's Disc and then being unable to use your older disc if he has a newer one.) If the Disc doesn't work (i.e. an older disc is installed, isn't read, or there isn't a disc) the system locks out ALL functionality until the disc is read. I don't know why in the hell Toyota did it that way...
