Hey guys I'm new here just came across this site but my wife's got a 2004 4runner with a bank one catalytic converter message. tried erasing the message, disconnecting the battery. no luck. it has 130,000 miles on it. Could the catalytic converter really go bad this early?

Definitely could, unfortunately. 4Runners are usually not very hard on their cat's, but it can definitely happen.

There was a TSB for sulfur smell. Maybe you could get the dealer to do the TSB. I would think a faulty O2 sensor is more likely to be the cause of the light.

Did you try clearing the light with a code reader?

Good luck!

Ya, I erased it but it came back so then I took it to toyota for them to diagnose and same thing. They said they would gladly help me out for a grand. seems a little high

do you think toyota would take care of it w/o warranty and this high of mileage?

The cat on my 3rd Gen went at around 120k, so yeah, they do go bad at that sort of mileage (I realize you have a 4th Gen, but the cat technology isn't drastically different from what I can work out). The truck wasn't used for offroading or towing, ie it wasn't thrashed hard. That said, it was left without new fuel for a little while which may have had something to do with it.

It's worth trying to see if it could possibly be anything else though because those things are darned expensive (was 2.5k to replace the 3rd Gen cat just to give you an idea).

And on Toyota replacing it without warranty and at 130k: No chance :(

i was actually contemplating on just getting new headers and exhaust all the way if I was going to spend the money but rockauto.com price sounds more do-able.
