It will require altering the wheel well though. I think some guys get away with 285/75's with a lift and no trimming, but go bigger and you will have to trim.
Yeah, you're probably right. The only reason I say "minor" alteration is that the 295 is really more tall than it is wide. It's only about .4 inches wider than a 285, but almost a full inch taller. Now, 305 or 315 is getting up into 35 territory and that's when major wheel well alteration is in order.

You dont NEED 4.88's to run 35's lol... 4.30's work just fine.. I'm now contemplating 4.56 or 4.88's
Not without spacers, different rims, pounding/trimming, or a combination of all of the above.

I haven't looked up the specs, but based on the posted size, a 295/75/16 ideally should be wider and not much taller than a 285/75/16.
The first number (285 or 295) is width, the second number (75) is height and the third number (16) is wheel diameter. Now each tire size is measured in relation to itself, so it will be taller and wider overall as you go up in size, but a 295, or 305 should be wider in relation to the overall height, given the same number of 75. Hope that makes sense, if not somebody may be able to clarify what I am saying.
That said, most tire fitment issues come from width, not height. You will find it easier (less modification such as lifting and trimming) to fit a taller tire than a wider tire.
EDIT: To clarify, a 285/75 or 295/75 or 305/75 should be 'roughly' the same height, but progressively wider respectively.
