Need to know what transmission this is, its attached to a 22re

suv had a auto and was converted over to 5 speed. I am going to install a V8 and wanted to know what ttrans this is so I will know if I can use it or not. And what adapter to get

Most likely it's a w56. Look around on the casing for a stamp though.

84/85' G52's and 85/88' G54's are always carburatored forward shifting bench seat style transmissions, with a 4 1/2" forward shifting t-case. Whereas 85/88 (early style) W56's are always EFI top shifting bucket seat style transmissions and a top shifting t-case. 89/95 (late style) W56's were always EFI and available bench or bucket seat with a 4" forward top shifting t-case.

The pic I took shows the transfer case as a forward shifting one. The trans was a swap in so I have no clue if they swapped in the transfer case also. OR what year they are..

The way I always check is open from the top. Take the shifter boot out and take a pic that way and post it.

the quote I posted above says either a 4" or 4.5" T-Case. so you should be able to just measure what you have.

Does it really matter what trans you have now? it's a 4 cylinder trans and its not going to hold up behind a V8. You need an appropriate Ford, GM, etc trans to go with the engine, and then maybe find an adapter to use a Toyota t-case. But even then you'll need a top shift 4 cyl t-case, not a forward shift one.

depending how its used, the w56 will run behind a stock v8.


but I agree, get the appropriate transmission.

also, the forward shift case can be converted to top shift. they do sell kits NOW, but I did it myself a few years ago.

I heard that some of the Yota transmissions can be used behind a V8. I dont plan on going more than a stock 5.3 or 350. I rather have a automatic so all this may just help me know what to list the trans model in the for sale ad.
Want to get a 700r so I have overdrive since the axles are geared 5.29

The trannies that come behind the 22R series engines don't last long behind a 4 cyl, I've gone through a bunch of L, G, and W series trannies over the years.
The 700R4 is a good choice, low 1st gear and O/D.

Yeah i have already ditched the idea of keeping the manual trans. super low gears in the axles and me not so good with the throttle and I think I break more stuff. Auto I can creep around stuff. I am going to go with either the turbo 350 or 700. Since the 4runner will only see minor highway times, dont really need over drive. Also 350s are easy to work on and are tough with litttle to no wiring or weird cables.

Gonna reuse my forward shift transfer case with a adapter to change to top shift.

Any one know where the cheapest place to get the adapter for either the 350 or 700r to the toyota transfer case?

I cant help with where to get an adapter, ive been out of that loop for too many years. I think ive had the 302 in my truck for 12-13 years now...
