So, it's been a quite a while since I've been on here. I used to have a great 2010 Trail that I built out and I loved it. Then I started doing 400 mile round trips twice a week and decided to move into something more comfortable.

I went for a GMC Denali, great ride, but it was a p/u. Then a move to where I am now, a 2016 LR4, currently untouched.

Here's my question, given the choice between the LR4 and a new '18 TRD Pro, which way would you lean and why?

I intend on building one out regardless of decision.

You like 4Runners, but you spend a lot of time on the road and need something comfortable? I'd say a Limited T4R or a GX460 over a TRD Pro.
 
I have a 2016 TRDPRO drive from Mid Atlnic to California Central Coast annually.
Other then the horrid MPG, love it. Usullay stop in SW CO or Jackson Hole. Total mileage is around 7,200 each trip.
 
My brother in-law is on his second 6.2L Denali and it does drive great on the highway and is incredibly quiet. I think the 4runner rides great for what it is on the highway and I have no issues doing long distances. I would probably choose a 4Runner Limited over the LR4 or a GX460. However, a standard length Yukon Denali wouldn't be a bad option. The 6.2L motor is just a beast and they are pretty damn reliable and have just as good resale value as a 4Runner.

Re-read your post and saw you wanted to do a build. A limited or TRD Off Road Premium with aftermarket suspension would probably ride the same. I have my days where I wish I had a Limited for some of the features.

We had a 2014 LR RR

We took that thing on Jug Handle Road in MOAB to the White Rim Trail. LOVED IT... Until..... CONSTANT warranty issues, weird, stupid, bad QA things. Transmission started giving errors at 18,000 miles, weird electrical.. you name it...
Service was a complete waste of $$, over-inflated charges, and parts that were near impossible to self service without special tools, or an ungodly amount of tear down time.
My wife couldn't understand how my FJ, at the time, had 45,000 miles, had quick, fast CHEAP oil changes, had been around country 2 times, and NEVER had issues, on top of the ease of performing maintenance, mods, etc.
Finally she decided, it was time to part ways before warranty killed us, or it left us in the high desert!
after 11 months.. BUH BYE. We miss the styling a ton, and comfortable/tech toys appointments, but really you cannot beat the Toyota.
She got a Lexus NX200t, which was fun and novel at the time, but soon after getting the T4R, she had enough of the luxury "shaft" you receive from owning luxury cars, and we got a Highlander Platinum.

We have never been happier driving our cars, and she is even 100% GO on a new Tundra to ADD to our Toyota family, once the T4R is paid off!
 
I love Land Rovers but we have two new Toyotas because they are amazing vehicles and reliable. I could not imagine dealing with the inflated LR prices and warranty issues.

BUT... If I had the money, I'd be driving a decked out LR4. Gotta pay to play right?
 
It depends on what you want to do with it. An LR4 weighs 5700lbs. You're starting with a super heavy base vehicle.
 
I'm guessing if you come to a T4R forum you will get a T4R answer.
Go to an LR4 forum (land rover?) and you will get a LR answer....

But that just's me.......
 
When I see someone driving a Land Rover, I always think that they must be able to afford not only the vehicle itself, but the imminent, numerous, costly repairs as well as the massive nose dive in value that those things take after a couple of years.

A South African friend once said to me "If we want to walk back, take the Land Rover, if we want to ride back, take the Toyota".
 
I've had plenty of Rovers. Back in the salad days- when I wasn't paying for anything (those days are long gone), I loved having something unique like a Rover. The last was a LR3 and honestly no problems until a small plastic part broke and disabled the Rover on a road trip (towing and labor cost were high for a cheap part to get it rolling again). I was getting close to 100K miles and the cost of a differential fluid change was going to cost me over $1000 and no one else but dealer, due to special tools, could do it- so I sold it. Plus the air-suspension was sure to fail at some point ($$). I'm very happy with my 4Runner Limited all time 4*4- you get used to having the full time 4 wheel drive and don't want to go back to part time (at least that's me). The only creature comforts I miss are the heating windshield, great for quick defrost or snow and ice, the rain sensor windshield wipers and instant lift from the airbags. I bought the 4R because it meets my desire for a true off-road capable vehicle and most importantly the reliability and residual value. Gas mileage could be better but same as the Rover. Seriously considered the Lexus GX, but several things annoying me- side swing rear door, no option on deleting 3rd row seats and worse mpg. Love the Land Cruiser but way too pricey and even worse mpg, however, everyone who has one seems to love them. If money isn't a major concern I'd probably recommend the LC.
 
I drive 30K/yr. When you drive that much you are on pace to go 40K/yr. When you drive these kind of miles doing a build is sorta pointless, at least for me. I made mine look pretty and left it at that. No change in suspension, no adding weight, no big ol Tires, nothing like that. Why? Because reliability and durability. No amount of mods make it more reliable or durable to drive 30-40K a year.
 
Apologies, I forgot to say that I'm no longer driving those kind of miles! Just running around town and a few road trips here and there

As for build... lift, tires, bumpers, the esthetic usuals...thank you for all of the responses so far
 
I would say what gives the most in smiles per miles.
My current car dose nothing for me and so I don't care about it.
Now a runner i don't care about the mpg or awkward things because it makes me smile when i look at and drive it.

Life's to short to settle.
 
Having owned both...i can say easily...the T4R...

not only is it as good as the LR4, as has been said, the LR4 WILL let you down, and probably leave you stranded at some point. maybe more than once.

Add to that, when it comes time to need parts, other than the things that you will already swap out, getting parts for it will be a chore and an expense.

If you havnt already, get the 4Runner...you already KNOW how realiable it is, you KNOW its a solid choice, and you KNOW youll enjoy the ownership.
