There's a ton of information on this site, and many of the best threads are cataloged in the stickies at the top of the main page.
Once you've taken some of that in, you'll be able to ask the right questions.
On a truck with that many miles, the first thing you want to tackle will be the lower ball joints. They're a well known problem, and the failure mode is basically the front wheel falling off. It could be catastrophic in certain situations (80MPH on the interstate for example). There are plenty of good write ups in that link.
While you're doing that, it makes good sense to do the inner and outer tie rods at the same time. That saves you the trouble of breaking the tie rod loose from the ball joint, and it's only another $100-150 or so in parts.
Once you have those things taken care of you can be confident you're safe, and then move on to things like steering rack bushings, shocks and struts, and sway bar end links.
The other major thing you want to take care of is the radiator. The failure mode on these allows coolant to mix with transmission fluid, and creates what's commonly called "the pink milkshake". It almost always ruins the transmission. The radiator is about $100 (and easy) to replace. The transmission.....not so much. :thumb:
