neutral safety switch

I have a problem starting my 2001 4runner since a collision. Sometimes when the key is turned nothing happens unless the gear shift is moved, yet other times it will start normal. Is this a problem with the neutral safety switch? If so where is it located? Thanks for your help.

oh man i was browsing through the threads and found this and had to read it. i used to own an older audi that had the same problem after a audio company installed my new stereo. it was a big mess! at first my car wouldn't start unless my seatbelt was clicked, than in wound down to a ghetto security feature where you had to have the shifter in the right position to start it. there were only 2 people that could find it that sweet spot, my dad and myself. so sorry you gota go through this. but to answer your question, on my audi the switch was under towrds the front of the little gear indicators from what i remember. it should be arond there somewhere. its a switch to keep you from 1. starting your turck in the drive or reverse and i think it keeps you from thowing it in reverse while in drive. good luck!!

Sorry don't have an answer to your question but ...

Just a thought, if this collision was recent and you just got your 4R back from the repair/body shop...shouldn't the shop be responsible for repairing the vehicle to its pre-accident condition? Of course if it has been a while...then you are probably on your own. Usually most shops guarantee their work for a while though.

could be a safety switch also check to see when it does it that the shiter is all the way forward in park. if is in park but not all the way sometimes the switch wont see it as being in park even though it is. but if work was just resent take it back and let them know. just a ?? but where was truck hit and how hard???
