Holy crap. Looks like a brand new vehicle too. Thew people nearly died from dehydration! Damn that trip took nasty turn.

Traveling Alone

That's a scary photo, the truck looks just like mine, and I will be off-roading solo in NM and AZ.

However, in addition to two GPS units and a 5-day supply of food and water (and let's not forget toilet paper!), I'm bringing along a PLB (Personal Locator Beacon).

These are essentially like the "black box" on an aircraft, but these can triggered manually, it doesn't have to be involved in a crash. Some PLBs will even broadcast your GPS coordinates as well as the distress signal, expediting the rescue. Even with a companion, if you are really getting into remote areas, a PLB should be considered. The cost about $500 and can also be rented if you don't wish to buy one.

Going alone is not necessarily dangerous IF you take normal precautions, like letting someone know your route and when you'll contact them next (so they can raise the alarm if you vanish), taking a decent water supply (especially in the desert) and having a decent topo map/gps unit (so you can find the nearest town or lake).

I'm fascinated by that picture... how on earth did they think they could get the truck through that gap??!

I alway's go offroad playing alone in some pretty tough situation's but , it's not a remote location as that.....That's crazy to go out in such a remote area with no supplies or safety gear.

Also what was the guy thinking trying to go through there. That alone show 's the novice in 4wheeling. That's something you would need a rock crawler for.

Although mine would make it no problem...... lol

I'm sure glad they are ok ( the dog too ). Look's like the 4R will be ok with some service and body work.

when you are offroading alone dont take risks, if you think theres a chance you are gong to get stuck turn around and go home, or call a friend. I wouldent take my 1991 through rocks like that let alone a 2006

Expensive lesson on how not to impress your wife/girlfriend... He's lucky that there were also no storms in the area, thay creek bed would have quickly flooded the rig (but he would have had some water). Glad all were okay in the long run.

In the SW, those dry creek beds are a blast, but the weather 50 miles away can create a flash flood coming down and with rock walls on either side, there was no place to go.
