4WD can be used in any condtion where traction is limited. The only time is should not be used is on DRY pavement. Well it can be used but only in straight lines. Turning will put a lot of stress on the system . If it's raining outside your fine. Some older '98s have the same multimode 4WD found in the newer 4runner. If it had the 4WD button on the transfer case shifter it's a multimode system.

Clemsonfan - Do yourself a favor and NEVER engage 4WD on dry pavement. Yes, it's probably okay to do it in a straight line, but why risk the extra wear and tear and possibly some repair bills? Toyota does recommend engaging 4WD every month, but only on dirt/loose gravel roads. If you have a stretch by your house, then do it there. It is good to work the 4WD system every month. BTW, you do not have a multi-mode 4WD system.

My mom has a '99 Limited and she uses just the AWD in almost any condition including more than a few inches of snow and the only time she's used true 4wd (outside of a few miles every few months to ensure it works) is when the snow gets a bit rediculous around here.
I had an AWD Eclipse that was fine in snow til about 8 inches and it was in danger of bottoming out.
AWD is actually better on slick surfaces than 4wd and I wish my Runner had it.

I cant find the reason why people are driving 4wd on pavement dry or wet. Are the roads in your area not made well? Even if it is raining cats and dogs I dont see the need.
Maybe if you live up a mountain where the roads are steep, but other than that why would you be driving in 4wd. Like someone said, the wear and tear is not worth it.
Where I live, there are not many trails to mess around on =( So trying to keep up with the 10 miles a month in 4wd is hard to do. But I would rather forfiet those 10 miles than engage on pavement.

Some of the roads near my house have large puddles where hydroplanning is a threat.
So you would say: no getting 10 miles a month > getting 10 miles a month on dry pavement?

I'm trading in my lancer, which has a dent behind the driver rear door - hit and run, front bumper paint flaking off... They don't know but the clutch is slipping a bit too.. I took out my sterio so it's stock sterio now too. 75k miles on it.
Then the difference is only $5k. So I got them to give me 5K for the lancer, and come down to 10k.. so I'm only looking at $5k.
