New 4R owner - intro and a few questions

Hello All - Just bought a 2005 4R Limited v8 with 107k on the clock. I tend to do most of the work myself on my cars, so I will likely be on here a lot. This is my first SUV and my first Japanese car, so I will probably find myself asking some dumb questions. Just wanted to introduce myself and ask a few quick questions.

I did search for these answers but I was not able to find what I was looking for. Is it me or is the search kinda weird? I typed in parking brake and got a bunch of threads about stereo installations. Anyway...

1) Dumb question - Is the actual screen of the AC unit meant to light up? I found a part number reference for the bulbs, but no pictures. The buttons on my unit lights up fine, but the actual screen does not. I am assuming one of the bulbs is out.

2) Tons of threads about replacing the JBL Receivers on here, but none that mention the backup camera. I have the 2005 JBL with Nav and Backup Camera. Anyone found a receiver that allows you to use the existing backup camera?

3) The parking brake pedal is really light to push in. The brake seems to hold just fine, but it is so light that if I even brush it with my foot the light comes on in the dash cluster. Any way to firm up the pedal?

Hello and welcome! The forum is full of great info and can probably answer just about anything you can ask.

Yeah, the search is pretty bad on this forum. I usually use Google for searches here, just add " site:toyota-4runner.org/4th-gen-t4rs" (no quotes) after your query to limit your results to this section. As for your specific questions:

1) The A/C screen does light up, there are 2 bulbs that illuminate it. Here's a link to the parts fiche, you'll need 2 of bulb C (90010-09017, shouldn't be too expensive from Toyota). Also make sure the rest of the bulbs are working while you're in there! Removal / installation is simple, see here.

2) The existing camera spits out a standard composite video signal, but I think the supply voltage is something funky (6V or so). J.A.'s site has a bunch of info on mods, the video one might help you figure some things out. Otherwise just check what voltage the head unit is supplying to the camera. Worst case, cameras are pretty cheap on Amazon/ebay.

3) Never heard of this parking brake problem before. Make sure the shoes in the rear brakes are adjusted properly (although if it's holding well then it sounds like they are). Maybe you can locate and adjust a plunger switch on the pedal assembly to make the light turn on later in the stroke? Sorry, no great ideas there.

So upon further inspection it seems that the parking brake pedal doesn't return all the way back up when I take it off. The brake releases and the light goes off but it is not 100% returned.

If I put my foot underneath it and pull it up it clicks and acts normal.

Any ideas for adjust the return on the parking brake?

Never heard of that problem but there has to be a spring somewhere that provides resistance to the pedal. I don't know where it is but I'd bet that the spring in your truck needs to be replaced
