New 4th Gen Owner

Hey all,

I've been active in the 5th Gen Section for a little while because of my wife's DD (in sig). We've started dabbling in the off-road world and I couldn't help but catch the bug and crave my own 4R!

Another 5th Gen was out of the budget, but I was in need of a new vehicle, so I pulled the trigger on a '08 Sport "Urban Runner" (whatever that means...?) It's a V6 and only has 86k on it, so I'm looking forward to at least another 200k!

I'm having a bit of a Napolean complex next to my wife's truck right now, so Mods are in order!

First things first, Tires: I'm very conflicted on this. I didn't realize the 4th Gen had such a significant difference in tire size to the 5th gen. Here I was thinking that 32's we're going to be an easy fit, and 33's would require a little trimming. Is it going to be a hard time stuffing 32's on a stock vehicle until I get new shocks and springs? Looking at 2.5-3 inches of lift in the front, maybe 2 in rear.

Next, I plan on 5100s all around with a new spring in the rear instead of a spacer.

Down the road, I'll add some sliders and beef up the skids, but that's it for now. Looking forward to joining the 4th gen community.

Nice clean white Urban Runner, good find! See you took the running boards off right away. I've still got mine on, I actually use them to get in.

Yeah, I took them off since I wasn't fond of how low it made it look. Also, maybe it's because I'm used to getting into the 5th Gen, but it made it feel kind of like one of those awkward half steps more than a natural feeling place to step up.

Cool, thank you. I was wondering about the cloth...I hadn't seen anything with seats like that in any of the other 4Rs I was looking at. That TomTom though...not a fan.

Urban Runner package was not available in Canada (according to my 2008 4Runner brochure) ... guess Toyota figures we are all "rural" up here

Welcome to the 4th Gen side! I think without the lift it may be a bit tough. My 32.5s had rubbing even with the 3" lift. My new set is 32.9 if I remember correctly. Plus, anything bigger won't fit in your spare tire compartment.

Wow, what a nice find. We really wanted a blizzard pearl sport or urban runner back in 2008 when we bought our black SR5.

5100's are a good start and a solid upgrade over OEM shocks. As for springs, Sway-Away springs (now Wheelers T12) seem to pair well with 5100s. Your best bet for running a 33" tire is to run a narrow tire.

Are they really? I've got them up in the classifieds if you want them

Maybe it was just a 5th gen thing? But the running boards seem to cause nothing but trouble when off-road. Plus, I like the look of more space between the road.

Took me forever to find a set here to replace my ugly running boards... Be careful letting those go. They cost a fortune to ship too.

I have read a lot of varying experiences, and I'm trying to narrow it down. If I'm not lifted but also not wheeling it yet, will 32's (275/65/18) be rubbing terribly? I don't mind shifting the wells, or even trimming a little, but I really don't want to deal with a BMC. I see a lot of you do body lifts, which I'm also trying to avoid for the time being.

Primarily, I would like a higher stance from a lift with bigger tires to start getting her a little dirty. I would be OK with the 265/65/18, but for some reason they're more expensive!
