NEW All-Terrain Tire from Goodyear!

Hey all,

Goodyear just came out with a revision of it's all-terrain tire, called "Wrangler SilentArmor." It has very interesting technology that can give BFG AT KO (along with Bridgestone Dueler AT REVO) a run for the money...literally. I believe that this tire is aim more towards BFG than the Dueler AT REVO. It is for people who do take their SUV/truck off-road or construction site.

It looks similar to the old Wrangler AT/S. It will be available in MAY 2005.

Goodyear Says Tough Tires Rule ... On or Off the Trail
January 28, 2005: 2:31 p.m. EST

DALLAS (PRNewswire) - DALLAS, Jan. 28 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- With a major product satisfaction award fresh on the trophy mantle, The Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company announces an addition to its line of Wrangler(R) premium tires for consumers who desire on/off-road performance for their trucks and SUVs.

The on/off-road capability of the Goodyear Wrangler featuring SilentArmor Technology(TM) is sure to merit a "two thumbs-up" rating from truck owners who are looking for hard-working performance. The new tire becomes available to consumers in May, in 24 sizes with rim diameters ranging from 15-17 inches.

Goodyear officials announced the new Wrangler today, adding it to the popular brand line that has been a leader in the light-truck/SUV segment for nearly 30 years. In the 2004 J.D. Power and Associates study, Goodyear tires were ranked "Highest in Original Equipment Tire Customer Satisfaction for Pickup/Full-Size Van Vehicles."

"Although most of their driving is on the road, truck owners want the capability to drive on any terrain," said Todd Hershberger, Goodyear marketing manager for light-truck tires. "They expect their tires to emulate the performance of their trucks. They have to be tough to get the job done, and they also have to be comfortable and quiet like a passenger car."

The Wrangler featuring SilentArmor Technology is a tire designed with the on/off-road pickup truck driver in mind. It can handle tough off-road conditions, while providing a smooth, quiet ride when driving around town, said Hershberger.

Rugged toughness is a focal point of this product. Features of the tire include:

- Two high-tensile steel belts and a layer made with DuPont KEVLAR(R).

- Goodyear's exclusive Durawall(TM) rubber compound, which reinforces the

sidewall to help resist punctures and cuts.

- Rim Guard, a design that further protects expensive wheels from

accidental curb damage.

The Durawall feature is a technology borrowed from Goodyear's tire for severe off-road use, the Wrangler MT/R. The Durawall compound in the sidewall helps with puncture resistance in an area that takes a beating when off the road or at a work site.

The layer made with KEVLAR also soaks up road noise for a smooth and quiet ride.

The Wrangler Featuring SilentArmor Technology also carries a consumer- friendly after-sale package to extend the feeling of total confidence in the product.

- The "Wrangler Utility Package" offers:

- 50,000-mile treadlife limited warranty

- 30-day no obligation trial period

- Nationwide warranty service

- Online product registration

- Tire rotation reminder service

- Off-road assistance

The new Wrangler also contains unique traction ridges designed between the tread of the tire. These aggressive ridges provide superb traction in wet or muddy conditions. The tire is certified for "severe snow" usage with the industry's mountain-snowflake symbol, able to take on snowy conditions, as well. The tread compound is a new Goodyear silica blend that maximizes wet traction without sacrificing treadwear.

"Truck owners want a tire that can get them through the tough terrain they sometimes face, yet still be mannerly during highway driving. This new Wrangler is a unique combination of toughness and low-noise. We call it the 'Strong, Silent Type,'" said Hershberger.

The SilentArmor Technology icon, an iron shield with the Goodyear wingfoot design inside, appears on the tire's sidewall to call out the benefit of the breakthrough technology specifically added to this tire.

Fitting the most popular truck sizes on the road, this vehicle segment consists of some of the hottest-selling trucks today, such as Chevrolet Silverado and Avalanche, Dodge Ram, Ford F-150, Toyota Tundra and others.

Goodyear is on a roll.

Last spring, the company introduced two new products under the Assurance name-- the TripleTred and ComforTred tires.

Those two tires were designed specifically for the passenger car market. The Assurance TripleTred features three separate traction zones-- a dry zone, a wet zone and an ice zone-- promising performance in all weather conditions. The Assurance ComforTred, on the other hand, was designed with comfort in mind, adding a cushioned Comfort belt to the tire belt mix for a plusher, quieter ride. Both tires launched well, doubling expected sales in North America.

Now less than a year later, Goodyear is building on that success with two new tires for the truck market-- the Fortera and Wrangler-- old familiar names encompassing all-new products. Which is in a way surprising because both the Fortera and Wrangler were already award-winning products. Indeed, the current generation Wrangler was recognized by J.D. Power while Fortera HL just recently won "best all-season light truck tire", beating out 22 other competitors in a Consumer Reports review.

"While some may say 'If it's not broken, don't fix it,' we believe in the challenge of taking great products and making them even better," said Jeanne Sherman, Goodyear's director of new products.

Goodyear conducted extensive research among truck and SUV owners to see what kinds of qualities customers were interested in. And in this segment of blended truck and passenger use, the main demands were for quiet, comfortable ride, safety and enough rugged toughness to take on the everyday unexpected hassles, whether on or off the road.

Goodyear responded to this challenge by adopting SilentArmor Technology, adding a layer of Kevlar, the renowned fiber developed by DuPont, to both tires.

Kevlar is not new to tire use. In fact, the first application of this miracle fiber which is, pound for pound, five times stronger than steel, was for aircraft tires, evolving to high-speed race tire development, police and military use.

No, these new tires are not bullet-proof.

But the Kevlar layer, made with combined strands of nylon, forms an encircling belt that tops two steel belts and adds both strength and performance. Other Kevlar qualities-- a molecular structure that dissipates energy, heat and sound - also add to the tires' overall performance. The all-weather tread has been fine-tuned for the quietest combination of ride and traction.

The Fortera also adds a tough Durawall silica-based rubber compound to reinforce the sidewall to help resist punctures and cuts. And a Rim Guard design protrudes from the sidewall to protect expensive wheels from accidental curb damage.

The Fortera was built specifically for SUVs. But, let's face it, most SUVs never venture off-road. So, cashing in on their successful passenger car ComforTred technology, the Fortera adds a super absorbent layer between the tire's tread and underlying belts, providing about 20 percent more cushion than average tires designed for SUVs and light trucks. This feature helps the new tire deliver a ride that feels more like a sedan than an SUV.

Fitting the most popular luxury and mid-value SUVs, the new Fortera featuring SilentArmor Technology will be initially available in 25 sizes, ranging from 15- to 20-inch rim diameters. This vehicle segment consists of more than 10 million vehicles, with familiar examples such as Jeep Grand Cherokee, Ford Explorer, Chevrolet Tahoe, GMC Envoy and Lincoln Navigator.

Now compared to the Fortera, the new Wrangler is a slightly more aggressive tire, designed for a greater degree of hard use and offroad potential.

On or off-road

The Wrangler featuring SilentArmor Technology is a tire designed with the on/off-road pickup truck driver in mind.

The Goodyear Wrangler with the SilentArmor Technology features the same Kevlar belt and Rim Guard but instead of a Comfort cushion belt, adds an extra layer of the same tough compound used in the Durawall over the steel belts, for better offroad protection. The Durawall feature is, after all, a technology borrowed from Goodyear's tough off-road Wrangler MT/R.

The new Wrangler is capped off with unique traction ridges designed between the tread of the tire. These aggressive ridges provide superb traction in wet or muddy conditions. The tire is certified for "severe snow" usage with the industry's mountain-snowflake symbol, able to take on snowy conditions, as well. The tread compound is also a new Goodyear silica blend that maximizes wet traction without sacrificing treadwear.

Fitting the most popular truck sizes on the road, on vehicles like Chevrolet Silverado and Avalanche, Dodge Ram, Ford F-150, Toyota Tundra, this latest addition to the lineup should live up to Wrangler's 30 year history of truck tough durability.

Tested well

Both tires tested very well in back-to-back comparisons against current-generation versions and competitors during some of the wet, dry and off-road testing, that I did last week.

These are both high quality and premium tires. You can expect them to be priced accordingly but keep an eye out for opening day sales.

you cant beat that 30 day no obligation trial period.

does BFG or Bridgestone offer a 30 day no
obligation trial period?

New Goodyear Tires Made From Bulletproof Vests
Akron Beacon Journal, Ohio - January 28, 2004
Motor Trend

Goodyear Tire & Rubber Co. is rolling out two new premium tires designed to capture a bigger share of the market for pickup trucks and sport utility vehicles.

Both tires include a layer made with Kevlar, a strong, lightweight material also used for bulletproof vests, anti-mine boots and aircraft panels. The fiber is intended to provide a quiet, smooth ride on highways or rugged terrain.

The Akron company plans to launch the tires next week at a tire dealers' conference in Dallas. Both tires will go on sale in May.

The new tires are updates to Goodyear's Wrangler and Fortera lines. Both will come equipped with what Goodyear calls "SilentArmor Technology" -- a term the company hopes will convey the impression of strong, silent performance.

The technology includes three main features: a Kevlar layer; a strong rubber compound to reinforce the sidewall; and a rim guard to protect expensive wheels from accidental curb damage. The Wrangler version also will include two high-tensile steel belts.

The new Wrangler will come in 24 sizes, with rim diameters ranging from 15 to 17 inches. It will fit vehicles such as the Dodge Ram, Ford F-150 and Chevrolet Silverado. The Wrangler line is known as Goodyear's most rugged passenger line.

The new Fortera will be available in 25 sizes, with rim diameters ranging from 15 to 20 inches. The Fortera, first introduced in 2001, is a hybrid tire targeted for large, cushy sport-utility vehicles that rarely, if ever, go off the road, such as the Chevrolet Tahoe and Lincoln Navigator.

The tires were designed in Akron.

Gadsden plant to make low-noise Goodyear tires

Goodyear Tire & Rubber Co. said Monday its Gadsden plant will produce a new low-noise tire that is being rolled out by the Akron, Ohio-based company.

Sales of the Wrangler tire featuring what Goodyear calls "SilentArmor Technology" are planned to begin in May.

Details about the new tire and the 1,400-employee Gadsden plant's role in its production were unveiled Monday at a dealer's conference in Dallas and at a gathering at the plant that a few years ago seemed destined to close. Goodyear-Gadsden will produce eight of the 24 sizes of the Wrangler tire.

Contains Kevlar:

The design of the tires includes two high-tensile steel belts and a layer of DuPont Kevlar - used in body armor, sports equipment and ropes on the Mars Pathfinder - to soak up road noise, Goodyear said. The new tires are designed for light pickup trucks and sport utility vehicles.

Though the technology for the new Wrangler was developed by corporate engineers, Goodyear-Gadsden spokeswoman Jackie Brehm Edmondson said some tires were made at the Gadsden plant and sent to Goodyear's proving grounds in San Angelo, Texas, for testing.

Gadsden-made tires also went to Minnesota and Canada to test performance in snowy and wet conditions, she said.

Goodyear-Gadsden was chosen to build the new Wrangler "because of the company's confidence in the plant's workforce and its ability to produce premium, quality products," the company said.

No new jobs:

Edmondson said the new work, however, doesn't mean new jobs for the 75-year-old plant, which was slated for closure a few years ago but won a reprieve after an upturn in tire demand.

Two of the new Wrangler tire sizes are in full production.

The Gadsden factory will continue making the Assurance model that the nation's largest tire maker assigned the plant last year to resolve a union dispute. Other Wrangler models, the Regatta 2 and the Ultra Touring tire, are among the 24,000 tires the facility produces each day, Edmondson said, adding that the number fluctuates depending on demand.

This is pretty cool...they are going after BFG AT KO, which has a similar off-road package:

I'll check them out

One of my old rides had the ATS's on them and they rocked, they just wore out quickly.

I'll definately check these out when it comes time to buy, its between these, the BFG's and the Nitto Terra Grapplers.

Tirerack now has prices. Looks like the Wrangler SilentArmor AT are a bit cheaper than the KOs. Hopefully Tirerack will do a comparison between the two.

This is great news, thanks Thai. It'll be my pleasure to be the first guinea pig on the forum. I've been planning on the BFG KOs because of the L/T rating, (rocks, everywhere I look) but was a bit worried about road noise, even though that wasn't gonna stop me.

Thanks to this forum, I don't have to worry about the 265/70/17 one-inch upsize.

C'mon May!

Hmm,another tire to consider but the price will have to be competitive with the Yok Geos and Revos I'm looking at also and maybe Nitto Terra Grapplers.

The 275/70/R17 looks like a great choice for those of us with just a little lift 2-3 inches?!

This is the size I want too! Looking to mount on 17x9 steelies. Thanks for the post.

This tire sounds great but I'm really itchin' to make a move. It looks to me like the BFG KO is still a more agressive tread with a little bit better dirt traction to be expected. The Goodyear will probably be better on the road. I'd love to get some comments from those with experience and an eye for treads. I just may have to go pull the trigger on some KOs.

I would still favor BFG AT KO if the prices are close. BFG is surprisingly well-behave on-road when i had them on my 4runner. IMO, they were just as quiet as the Bridgestone Dueler REVO...and quieter than Michelin LTX A/T.

And don't forget, all BFG AT KO are LT-rated (more tread plies = stronger against puncture).

Thanks. I don't think I can hold out until May.
