NEW antenna mast - But still a grinding noise

Just my 2 cents for my experience replacing:
I ordered a cheapo off Amazon for 25 bucks and have had no problems. I thought about the whip antenna idea but I kind of like seeing it go up and down. As others have stated, good to take that motor out, open it up and see if any broken pieces in there.

It might have broken pieces from a previous antenna but the current one isn't broken. Still; it's 18 yo so who knows what some previous owner did or didn't do.

I replaced mine with an OEM whip antenna base from the dealer (around $75) and a short rubber antenna from Amazon. I bought an adapter from Amazon so I could use the diversity antenna in the right rear window also.

Quoting myself to let anyone with the same issue know this fix worked.
It's too bad there isn't a separate button to raise or lower the antenna. Chances are they wouldn't go bad because they wouldn't raise and lower every time the car was started or stopped with the radio on.

Many of us added one....post 1032, though there's likely actual much better write-ups out there, mine was interrupt the blue/white antenna wire (dunno what color yours is...) with an on/off switch and ta-da.

I got an antenna out of a wrecked 4Runner last time I needed parts. The antenna was destroyed but the guts were fine, got it super-cheap. I used the guts to rebuild the one I had.
When I first bought the truck it had a broken antenna mast track, it was simply unplugged to stop the thing from running until I replaced the mast.

OKay, Pulled motor and cleaned.
1st New OEM mass retracted smooth , then pulled cable cord out of mass.
2nd mass retracted smooth . Came up fully, nice but motor continued to push. Sounds like its spinning or grinding on teeth, Loud. Retracts fine .
I disconnected power to motor. I would like to be done with motor and go with standard if they make a standard retro fit antenna that gets good reception.
I sure would like some input. Not sure about 69bucks for small 7" whip type?

Pho Runner on YT has a cheap alternative to the whip mod, all that one requires is some patience, a 1$ nut from Lowe's and whatever toyota antenna you want, I got mine from a 03 tacoma at the junkyard
