New black rims

I figured i might as well update the thread with my new pics. I got some new tires and Les Schwab completely jacked the PC on the rims, so they re-coated them for me. I opted to get a flatter black this time around and am much happier with the look, although they are a lot harder to clean now. The tires are Wild Counrty TXR's in 265/70/17. The lugs are hammered on now and need some work but ive been too lazy to do it.

GYoter... the flat is hott. Just out of curiosity, what flat percentage did you get the second time around. I'm really looking to do this, but I'll probably go with flat 'gunmetal' instead of black because my Runner is white, and I don't know how that would look.

Would you recommend Wion again? And how did there job hold up for the time that you had it?

Im not sure what % it is now. When Les Schwab did it they only had glossy or flat, i went with flat.

When Wions did it i had 50% gloss and it was shinier than I wanted so i would go with less gloss than that, i am guessing here but maybe 25% gloss would be better. As far as would I go with wions again...im not sure. Les Schwab claimed there was something wrong with the coat since it shouldnt have chipped like it did, but maybe the coat was fine and the wrench monkey just f'd it up. Another member on here also went to wions and from what i gather he has had no problems. I would say Wions was fine and les schwab was trying to get out from under the blame.

Calm down... I didn't get powder coated wheels. This is merely a deceptive photoshop (MS paint) job that I did.

WOW, you should really be on toyota's design team with those skills. LOL.

As telling as that chop job is i think white with black rims would look good. I think someone on here did that but it might take some serious searching to find it.

Thats what i was thinking. From afar it would look like nothing was there. Maybe the black pearlescent(sp?) would look better. I have been thinking my goal will be to eliminate all chrome, except the V8 on front, that will stay.

Sac state-you cant see too much frame or underbelly from sideways. I think it looks way better without them. One of the main reasons i took them off was because when i got out of the car my leg would hit them, it irritated me so i ditched them. Here's more of a side shot for you to see.

Love it! Nice job! I was considering something similar- my Pc guy including sandblasting was gonna charge $60/rim.

So i finally got all the lugs painted. Had to do 4 at a time, 1 per wheel per day basically. Hopefully they will hold up pretty well.

Yep. I used gloss black spray paint followed by a clearcoat. The photo doesn't show the gloss very well. Also, the photo makes it look like the front sits higher than the back, but that's due to the angle of the driveway.

No kidding.... hmm, so you did it yourself? That looks really good! Although I'm more partial to the flat look. Any special spray paint?

I followed the numerous how-to's that are out there on the web. Degrease, sand, wipe down, mask, primer, color coat, clear coat, let dry... I used rustoleum professional primer and color, along with Duplicolor clear coat made for wheels. I couldn't find any wheel paint locally in gloss black, but they did have it in the flat. Masking off the tires was easy. The hardest parts were sanding (tedious) and painting (fumes and very sore fingers from pressing the paint nozzle). It took literally all day to do it and ran about $40 in supplies. There are 2 coats of primer, 3 coats of black, and 2 coats of clear. I would have liked to do more coats, but my fingers were killing me. (I needed one of those trigger things you use on spray cans!)

Time will tell how well or poorly the paint holds up. Powdercoat would be much more durable. I would have preferred the powdercoat option, but it was not feasible for me for a variety of mundane reasons.

Here's mine with some flat black AR Fuel 8 teflons. Got them through discount tire for $160 each. Wrapped them in Cooper Zeon LTZ 285/60R18 tires. It was just was I was looking for. Rear end is sagging a little b/c all 4 of my old wheels/tires are still in it.

Those look great!! Nice choice!! I'm surprised they fit without a lift and liner/fender mods- don't they rub??
