new brake pads/calipers and now a clanking noise over bumps

2005 4runner 4wd

I just had my front brakes and calipers replaced and now when I go over bumps I hear a clanking/rattle noise coming from what I believe is the front of the vehicle.

I then brought the vehicle back to my mechanic and asked him to replace the rotors. At the same time I asked him to investigate the clanking noise.

He told me he checked everything and tightened everything and couldn't find the problem.

Other than a "clanking" metal hitting metal noise the sound reminds me of when you put the vehicle in reverse and hit the brakes you can hear a clank in the rear coming from the brakes. I have had that noise for the life of the vehicle and just figured it was normal.

Any ideas?

I read somewhere about "anti rattle spring" for the front brakes. Not sure what those are or if they have anything to do with my problem.

Yeah, I had this problem a couple months ago. There is a spring that attaches to the brakes somewhere down there and if the mechanic forgets to put the spring back on, then you'll hear that sound. It's a $5 spring for each side and probably takes 10 minutes to do I'd say.

Is there any way I can see the springs myself and see if they are there before going to the mechanic?

Yes that is it. I have the same clanking noise and looked at my front brakes and didnt see the anti rattle springs in there. I have 2 on order at the dealer. They come in tomorrow so hopefully this fixes the noise. Here is the part number

I had some extra springs laying around, so I put 2 on each caliper. Definitely fixed the pad rattle I had.

got the anti rattle clips from dealer and installed today. Took a test drive and no rattle. Woo Hoo! Rattle solved.

hey ant what brand did u you for your caliper and rotor and how is working so far. im looking around to change my caliper and rotor (front wheels)

I havent solved the problem yet.

I called my mechanic but he doesn't think it's the springs as he said they are OEM and that brakes shouldn't be the cause. He thinks it's something else. I forgot what he said. Tie rods maybe or something else.

I'm going in on Tuesday to have him check it out and take him for a test ride.


The brakes seem like the perfect culprit since the noise started after the brakes pads were replaced and everything I read here and elsewhere says it's the anti rattle springs etc.

I guess we will see.

Drive over some bumps to reproduce the rattle (dirt road or something). While the noise is occurring, press the brakes. If the noise goes away while the brakes are pressed, it is the anti rattle springs. They are super easy to change. Literally if you can change a wheel/tire you can replace these springs.

Save yourself some $, and check it out yourself.

I thought that was an option but since I don't really understand why brake assemblies NEED these anti rattle springs I wasn't sure if it was a good test.

I'll give it a try.
